Morgan Boys’ Soccer Takes Defeat to East Hampton in League Championship; Girls’ Volleyball Drops Contest in Conference Quarters

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team earned a penalty kick victory versus Old Saybrook in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament to advance to the championship game on Nov. 4. The Huskies took a 3-1 defeat versus East Hampton in the Shoreline final to give the team an overall record of 14-4-1 heading into the Class M State Tournament this week.

After posting a 6-0 shutout over Cromwell in the quarterfinal round, No. 3 seed Morgan was on the road to face No. 2 seed Old Saybrook for a Shoreline Conference semifinal game that was a rematch of last year’s final. Morgan claimed a 3-2 win against the Rams by winning the penalty kick session by a 4-3 margin after the two rivals were locked in a tie through regulation and overtime.

With the win, Morgan advanced to face No. 1 seed East Hampton in the championship game of the Shoreline Conference Tournament at Portland High School on Nov. 4. The Huskies lost to the Bellringers by the final score of 3-1 in the contest.

East Hampton scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 lead over Morgan in the Shoreline final. The Bellringers netted their second goal in the 37th minute and held a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Senior Sebastian Kadlof put Morgan on the board when he scored from fellow senior Erik Barrera to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 48th minute of the game. However, East Hampton scored an insurance goal in the 62nd minute to make it 3-1 and then held on to win the game by that same score to take home the conference title.

Morgan is the No. 9 seed in the Class M State Tournament and is hosting No. 24 seed O’Brien Tech for a first-round contest on Monday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. If the Huskies win, they will face the winner of No. 8 seed Suffield and No. 25 Foran in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

The Class M state quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 11. The semis will be held from Tuesday, Nov. 15 to Thursday, Nov. 17; and the Class M title game is being hosted at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford on either Saturday, Nov. 19 or Sunday, Nov. 20.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Morgan girls’ volleyball team took on Coginchaug in a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal match last week. The Huskies took a 3-1 defeat against the Blue Devils to put their overall record at 10-11 entering the Class S State Tournament.

On Nov. 1, No. 6 seed Morgan traveled to Durham to face No. 3 Coginchaug in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament. Coginchaug won the match by a 3-1 final, prevailing with set scores 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22.

Senior Eva O’Sullivan recorded 33 assists to go with 21 digs and 3 kills for Morgan in its Shoreline quarterfinal match versus Coginchaug. Senior Amelia Whelan had 12 kills with 5 digs and 3 assists, senior Kacey Edwards had 18 digs and 8 kills, junior Julia Kelly posted 14 digs with 7 kills, and senior Kendra Robayo finished the match with 5 digs and 3 kills.

Senior Maddie O’Sullivan punched up 23 digs for the Huskies in the Coginchaug contest. Senior Courtney Vause had 15 digs, junior Anna Fasulo recorded 13 digs, junior Molly Vitola had 11 digs, and senior Sofie Passante added 7 kills for Morgan.

Morgan has the No. 19 seed in the Class S State Tournament and will face Coginchaug again when the Huskies play a first-round matchup at the 14th-seeded Blue Devils on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. With a win, Morgan would play at No. 3 seed Wolcott Tech on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

The Class S quarterfinals will be held on Friday, Nov. 11. The semifinals take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15; and the Class S state final is being hosted at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Football

The Morgan football team hit the road to face Granby-Canton (G-C) for a Friday night matchup on Nov. 4. The Huskies took a 38-22 loss against the Bears at Granby High School to put their overall record at 2-5 on the season. G-C moved to 6-2 on the year with the win.

Morgan is hosting Ellington (5-2) for its next game on Friday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Peters Complex. After that, the Huskies are playing a home game versus North Branford on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The Huskies will then be on the road to play Old Saybrook-Westbrook in the annual Thanksgiving week game between the rivals on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m.
