Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team closed out the 2022 regular season by posting a shutout victory over Hale-Ray and then blanked Cromwell in a Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinal game last week. The Huskies have an overall record of 13-3-1 as they get ready to face Old Saybrook in the Shoreline semifinals.

On Oct. 25, the Huskies hosted Hale-Ray for its regular-season finale at the Indian River Complex and defeated the Noises by the final score of 8-0. Freshman Jonny Gutierrez recorded a hat trick by netting 3 goals for the Huskies in the win. Senior Sebastian Kadlof had an assist on two of Gutierrez’s goals and also converted a penalty kick in the victory. Freshman Jeremy Medranda scored 2 goals for Morgan and assisted on one of Gutierrez’s scores.

Senior Erik Barrera scored a goal for the Huskies in their win versus Hale-Ray. Sophomore Cinar Yucel had 2 assists for Morgan, getting the helper on Barrera’s goal and also on one of Medranda’s goals. Morgan also scored off of an own-goal by Hale-Ray following a cross by freshman Matt Maher that hit a defender and then went into the goal.

On Oct. 29, No. 3 seed Morgan hosted No. 6 Cromwell in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament and won the contest by a 6-0 score. Gutierrez netted 3 goals for a hat trick in the victory. Kadlof scored 2 goals, one of which came on a penalty kick, to go with 1 assist.

Freshman Jeremy Medranda scored 1 goal to go with 2 assists for Morgan, while freshman Emiliano Miranda and junior Tyler Febbroriello each had 1 assist. Freshman netminder Liam Totten made 7 saves to record to the shutout in goal for the Huskies.

The Huskies are playing at No. 2 seed Old Saybrook in the conference semis on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. With a win, the Huskies would advance to the final to play the winner of No. 1 seed East Hampton and No. 4 Old Lyme at Portland High School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Last year, Morgan shared the Shoreline title with Old Saybrook after playing the Rams to a 1-1 tie in the league final.

Following Shorelines, Morgan will take part in the Class M State Tournament that begins on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team played a pair of home games to wrap up the 2022 regular season last week. The Huskies notched a tie versus Cromwell and then defeated Old Saybrook to finish with an overall record of 10-3-3 for the regular season this fall.

Morgan hosted Cromwell on Oct. 24 and played the Panthers to a 0-0 draw at the Indian River Complex. Junior goalie Samantha Way made 7 saves in net to get the shutout for the Huskies.

Three days later, the Huskies welcomed Old Saybrook to town for another home game and posted a 2-0 win over the Rams. Senior Katie Martin scored the first goal of the game on an assist from freshman Sadie Passante in the 24th minute to give Morgan a 1-0 lead at halftime. Junior Lily Tanner netted an unassisted goal in the 65th minute of the contest to put a capper on a 2-0 victory for the Huskies. Way made 2 saves for another shutout.

Morgan recorded 12 shutouts in its 16 regular-season games this fall. The Huskies only allowed 2 goals in their Shoreline Conference contests during the regular season.

Defending champion Morgan is the top seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and has a bye through the first round. The Huskies are hosting No. 4 seed Portland in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. If Morgan wins, it will play for the Shoreline title against the winner of No. 2 seed Cromwell and No. 6 Old Saybrook at Portland High School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. After Shorelines, the Huskies will open play in the Class S State Tournament that gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Field Hockey

The Morgan field hockey team finished its regular season strong by notching victories in all three of its home games last week. The Huskies posted wins over Somers-Rockville, Lyman Hall, and Norwich Free Academy during the final week of their regular season, finishing with an overall record of 5-9-0-2 on the year.

Morgan kicked off last week by earning a 7-0 home win against the Somers-Rockville co-op squad on Oct. 24. Then on Oct. 26, the Huskies hosted Lyman Hall and defeated the Trojans by a 6-3 score at the Indian River Complex. The very next day, Morgan claimed a 6-2 win over Norwich Free Academy in a non-conference home game on Senior Night.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Morgan girls’ volleyball team played three matches to close out regular-season action last week. The Huskies came away from the slate with two wins after taking a loss to Haddam-Killingworth and then earning victories versus Montville and New London to finish the regular season with a record of 10-10.

On Oct. 24, Morgan played a road match against Haddam-Killingworth and took a 3-2 defeat against the Cougars. H-K won the marathon contest with set scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 13-15, 15-12.

Senior Eva O’Sullivan posted 26 assists to go with 4 aces and 4 kills for the Huskies in the match. Senior Kacey Edwards finished the match with 22 digs, 13 kills, and 2 aces. Senior Maddie O’Sullivan had 14 digs with 2 aces, senior Kendra Robayo recorded 7 kills and 2 digs, junior Ainsley Corgan had 8 digs with 3 kills, and senior Amelia Whelan added 4 kills for Morgan.

Then on Oct. 26, the Huskies hosted Montville and won the contest by a 3-0 score. Morgan swept the matchup by the final tally of 25-15, 25-15, 25-22.

Edwards finished the contest with 10 digs, 6 kills, and 3 aces for the Huskies. Junior Julia Kelly had 6 with 4 digs and 2 aces, while senior Sofie Passante posted 9 kills in the victory. Senior Courtney Vause, junior Molly Vitola, and junior Anna Fasulo contributed 6 digs apiece on the night.

The following day, Morgan faced New London at home for its regular-season finale and notched a 3-0 shutout versus the Whalers. Morgan took the match by the final tally of 25-13, 25-11, 25-19.

Edwards turned in another solid performance with 7 kills, 7 digs, and 5 aces in the triumphant effort. Maddie O’Sullivan had 7 digs and 6 aces for the Huskies. Whelan recorded 5 kills with 1 ace, while senior Sydney Robison and senior Magdalena Lagos each had 3 kills.

Morgan is the No. 6 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and will play a quarterfinal match at No. 4 seed Coginchaug on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. With a win, the Huskies would play at No. 2 seed East Hampton in the semis on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. The Shoreline Conference final will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5. When Shorelines are done, Morgan will compete in the Class S State Tournament that begins on Monday, Nov. 7.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Morgan boys’ cross country team competed in the Class SS State Championship meet that was hosted at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 29. The Huskies scored 437 points as a team and finished in 15th place at the meet.

Senior Matthew Menacho led the Huskies’ pack by finishing in 68th place at the Class SS State Championship. Menacho ran a time of 20:31 on his way to placing 68th. Senior Nicholas Spaziano was next in line for Morgan by taking 73rd place with a time of 20:38.

Sophomore Wyatt Luke came in 101st place (21:16) for the Huskies in states. Junior Robert Estabrook finished in 104th place (21:44), while freshman Owen Lombardi finished in 106th (21:57). Junior Lucas Hoadley finished in 126th place (23:56), and freshman Anthony Strunjo finished in 140th place (25:20) for Morgan.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Morgan girls’ cross country team sent three athletes to participate in last week’s Class SS State Championship meet. The meet took place at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.

Sophomore Natalie Estabrook turned in Morgan’s top performance at the Class SS State Championship. Estabrook finished in 43rd place after crossing the finish line with a time of 24:20 for the Huskies.

Junior Gavin Gersz took 61st place by recording a time of 25:05 for Morgan at states. Junior Shania Weisse finished in 95th place with a time of 30:59.

Football

The Morgan football team was on the bye week last week. The Huskies will return to action to play a road game against Granby-Canton at Granby High School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Morgan comes into the game with an overall record of 2-4, while Granby-Canton has a 5-2 on the year.

Following that game, Morgan is hosting Ellington on Friday, Nov. 11 and North Branford on Friday, Nov. 18, with both games beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Huskies will then play their annual Thanksgiving Week game versus Old Saybrook-Westbrook at Old Saybrook High School on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m.
