Knights’ Field Hockey Prevails in Regular-Season Finale; Boys’ Soccer Plays Harding to a 1-1 Draw

Field Hockey

The Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) field hockey team hosted non-conference opponent Waterford for its last match of the regular season on Oct. 26. The Knights notched a 3-0 victory versus Waterford at Westbrook High School to cap off regular-season action with an overall record of 8-6-2.

W-OL scored the first goal of the game in the opening quarter and maintained its 1-0 lead over Waterford heading into the fourth quarter. The Knights then netted a pair of goals during the final frame to finish off the win.

Senior Halley Pierson, junior Emma Bransfield, and sophomore Megan Bache scored the goals for W-OL in its victory against Waterford. Senior Myan Nguyen recorded 2 assists for the Knights. Senior Delaney Belcourt also had an assist to help Head Coach Janet Dickey’s squad get the victory.

W-OL is the No. 4 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and will play a semifinal game against top-seeded North Branford at the Indian River Complex in Clinton on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. With a victory, the Knights would face the winner of No. 2 seed Old Saybrook and No. 3 Valley Regional for the title on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Indian River Complex in Clinton.

Following Shorelines, W-OL will be competing in the Class S State Tournament that gets underway on Monday, Nov. 7.

Boys’ Soccer

The Westbrook boys’ soccer team headed to Bridgeport to play a game against Harding last week. The Knights battled Harding to a 1-1 tie in the non-conference contest on Oct. 24.

Junior Elliot Koplas scored Westbrook’s lone goal of the game to help the Knights pick up a point with their draw versus Harding last week. Westbrook moved to 4-8-3 on the season by virtue of that result.

Westbrook will be on the road to face Amistad in its last game of the regular season this week.

Girls’ Soccer

The Westbrook girls’ soccer team completed its regular season by playing a pair of games last week. The Knights took a loss against Coginchaug and then lost to Valley Regional to finish the year with an overall record of 5-10-1.

In its first game of the week, Westbrook traveled to Durham to face Coginchaug and took a 5-0 defeat to the Blue Devils on Oct. 25. Two days later, the Knights hosted Valley Regional for their regular-season finale and took a 4-0 defeat versus the Warriors at Westbrook High School.
