Westbrook’s Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey Teams Gain a Split on the Week
Boys’ Soccer
The Westbrook boys’ soccer team split a pair of contests last week to move to 4-8-2 entering the home stretch of its regular season. The Knights took a loss against Old Lyme before bouncing back with a win over Coginchaug later in the week.
In its first game of the week, Westbrook took a 3-0 defeat against Old Lyme on Oct. 17. Three days later, the Knights hosted Coginchaug and edged out the Blue Devils by a 2-1 score at Westbrook High School.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Engels made 8 saves to get the win in net for Westbrook when the team defeated Coginchaug last week. Junior John Heringer scored one of the Knights’ goals on an assist from fellow junior Doug Perrone-Gray. Later in the game, Perrone-Gray scored on an assist by junior Elliot Koplas to help Derek Hanssen’s club emerge victorious.
Westbrook will conclude its regular season with a road game against Amistad on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The Westbrook girls’ soccer team hosted Old Lyme for its lone matchup on last week’s schedule. The Knights dropped a 5-0 decision to the Wildcats to put their overall record at 5-8-1 on the year.
Westbrook will finish its season by playing a home game versus Valley Regional and a road game against Coginchaug this week.
Field Hockey
The Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) co-op field hockey team moved to 7-6-2 on the season after gaining a split of its two road games last week. The Knights took a loss to Canton and then came back to get a win against Newington in last week’s action.
W-OL began last week by taking a 2-0 defeat against Canton in a road game on Oct. 19. Junior goalie Abby Demers made 9 saves in net for the Knights. Senior Myan Nguyen had 2 saves at the goal line for W-OL.
Two days later, the Knights were back on the road to face Newington and notched a 1-0 victory in the contest. Senior Halley Pierson scored the only goal of the game unassisted at the 5:30 mark of the fourth quarter to lift the Knights to the win. Demers made 5 saves to get the shutout in goal.
W-OL is hosting Waterford for its final game of the regular season this week.
