Old Saybrook’s Soccer Teams See Undefeated Weeks; Cross Country Squads Hit the Course for Shorelines
Boys’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team had a busy stretch with four matchups on its schedule last week. The Rams notched three wins and a tie on the week to improve their overall record to 12-0-2 entering the home stretch of the regular season. Old Saybrook posted shutouts against Coginchaug, North Branford, and Haddam-Killingworth before wrapping up last week with a tie against East Lyme.
The Rams kicked off recent action by posting a 4-0 road victory versus Coginchaug on Oct. 17. Junior Kevin DeCapua scored 3 goals for Old Saybrook in the game. Sophomore Brendan Cassella scored the other goal for the Rams in the win. Senior Bradley Kulmann had 2 assists, while senior Mike Kapij and junior Drew Kulmann contributed 1 assist apiece. Junior London Sweeney recorded the win in net with assistance from sophomore Brayden Hagelston and freshman Richard Greyson.
Then on Oct. 19, the Rams hosted North Branford and blanked the Thunderbirds by an 11-0 score at Old Saybrook High School. DeCapua and fellow senior Cameron DeAngelo both scored 3 goals in the victory. Sophomore Felipe Dutra netted a pair of goals for the Rams. Old Saybrook also received 1 goal apiece from Bradley Kulmann, senior Brent Ling, senior Juan Arciniegas, and freshman Joao Contin. Sweeney earned another win in goal with help from Richards.
The very next day, Old Saybrook claimed a 4-0 home win over Haddam-Killingworth on Senior Night. DeAngelo, Cassella, Bradley Kulmann, and Arciniegas all scored a goal to help Head Coach Steve Waters’s team get the victory.
The Rams finished off the week by playing East Lyme to a 2-2 draw in a non-conference road game on Oct. 22. Old Saybrook rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pick up a point with the tie. Bradley Kulmann scored at the end of the first half to make it 2-1. In the second half, DeCapua netted the equalizer off a hard-working assist by DeAngelo, putting the score at 2-2.
Old Saybrook will conclude its regular season by playing road games against Fitch and East Hampton this week.
Girls’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team played two games last week and came away with a pair of victories to boost its overall record to 5-5-3 on the season. The Rams earned a shutout victory versus Coginchaug before defeating Haddam-Killingworth to sweep last week’s matchups.
On Oct. 18, Old Saybrook hosted Coginchaug and blanked the Blue Devils by a 3-0 score. Three days later, the Rams were on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and posted a 1-0 victory over the Cougars in the contest.
Old Saybrook is playing a road game versus Morgan in its regular-season finale this week. The game gets underway at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Indian River Complex in Clinton.
Field Hockey
The Old Saybrook field hockey team hit the road to face Norwich Free Academy (NFA) for its lone game on last week’s slate. The Rams claimed a 3-0 win against NFA in non-conference action on Oct. 22 to improve to 10-4-1 for the season.
Junior Amelia Sigersmith scored 2 goals for Old Saybrook in last week’s win against NFA. Freshman Kendall Dobratz had 1 goal with 1 assist for Head Coach Nancy Gatta’s squad.
Old Saybrook will be on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth for its last game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3:45 p.m.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook boys’ cross country team hit the trails to compete in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Hammonasset State Park in Madison on Oct. 20. The Rams turned in a fifth-place performance by recording a team score of 153 points at the conference meet.
Junior Parker Cook garnered All-Shoreline Conference First Team accolades by taking fifth place for Old Saybrook at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Cook ran a time of 16:47.5 on his way to finishing fifth for the Rams in the meet.
Junior Nwang Choegyal took 25th place on behalf of Old Saybrook by clocking in with a time of 18:18.4 at Shorelines. Senior Logan Worman finished in 33rd place after reaching the finish line in 18:41.7.
Junior Gabriel Rutan came in 44th place (19:15.9) for the Rams at Shorelines. Sophomore Everett Miller finished in 48th place (19:32.8) at the meet. Sophomore Jack Lowry finished in 51st place (19:50.6), and junior Adrian Garcia came in 68th place (21:53.0) while representing Old Saybrook.
Next up for Old Saybrook is the Class S State Championship that’s taking place at Wickham Park on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 11:55 a.m.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook girls’ cross country team finished in sixth place when it competed at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship meet. The Rams posted a team score of 135 points on their way to placing sixth in Shorelines at Hammonasset State Park on Oct. 20.
Catherine Minegar came in seventh place by running a time of 20:24.6 for Old Saybrook at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Junior Carlina Castro claimed ninth place after crossing the finish line with a time of 20:27.8. Both athletes earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors by virtue of their performance.
Senior Vikki Carrica finished in 37th place (23:05.0) while representing the Rams at Shorelines. Freshman Cassandra Garcia finished in 44th place (23:46.4), while sophomore Cat Pamment came in 49th place (25:05.1) for Old Saybrook.
The Rams will be competing in the Class S State Championship on Saturday, Oct. 29. The meet gets underway at 11:20 a.m. at Wickham Park.
Football
The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team hosted Cromwell-Portland for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division contest on Oct. 22. The Rams took a 42-0 loss against the Panthers at Old Saybrook High School to move to 0-6 overall with a record of 0-5 in the division.
OS-W is hosting Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman for its next game on Saturday, Nov. 5. The matchup gets underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Old Saybrook High School.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Old Lyme-Valley Regional-Old Saybrook (OL-VR-OS) co-op girls’ swimming and diving team competed against Fitch-Stonington-Wheeler-New London in a road meet last week. The Wildcats took an 83-71 loss in the contest that was held on the campus of UConn on Oct. 18.
OL-VR-OS has a road meet versus Suffield at Windsor Locks High School in its regular-season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
