The Morgan football team traveled to Durham to square off against the Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton (C/H-R/EH) co-op squad for a divisional game on Oct. 22. The Huskies claimed a 58-39 victory against the Blue Devils at Coginchaug High School to improve their overall record to 2-4 with a mark of 2-3 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division this year.
Junior quarterback Tyler Baldwin went 21-of-38 passing for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Morgan to last week’s victory. Baldwin also dominated the ground game by running the ball 30 times for 189 yards and 3 touchdowns, ultimately accounting for 7 scores on the day.
Junior Jack Nye had 12 receptions for 224 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Huskies in the win. Senior Jake Caprio had 7 catches for 133 yards and a TD.
Morgan and C/H-R/EH traded touchdowns during the first quarter. Baldwin’s 5-yard touchdown run put the Huskies on the board and, later in the frame, he connected with Caprio on a 63-yard TD pass. Baldwin then threw to 2-point conversion to Nye to give Morgan a 14-13 lead after one.
The squads continued going back-and-forth during the second quarter. Baldwin threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nye and also ran for an 11-yard TD in the period. Sophomore Dominic Larabee rushed for the 2-point conversion after the first score and, following the second score, Baldwin tossed the 2-point try to sophomore Griffin Ranaudo to put the Huskies up 30-25 at halftime.
The Blue Devils scored the first touchdown of the third quarter to grab a 33-30 advantage, but Morgan responded with a pair of TDs to take the lead for good. First, Baldwin found Nye for a 61-yard touchdown strike to give the Huskies a 36-33 lead. Later in the frame, Baldwin threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Nye to make it 42-33 entering the fourth quarter.
After the Blue Devils scored a TD to cut the deficit to 42-39, Morgan scored the final two touchdowns of game to solidify the victory. Baldwin scored on a 2-yard run and then went to Nye for the 2-point conversion to make it 50-39. The Huskies put the game away when Larabee returned an interception for a 30-yard pick-6 in the closing minutes. Baldwin threw the 2-point pass to Ranaudo to finish off the 58-39 victory.
Junior Jacob Jones also had an interception on defense for Morgan in the win. Senior Aidan Staunton recorded a sack for Head Coach Kevin Sullivan’s club.
Morgan will be on the bye week for this upcoming week. The Huskies will return to action to play a road game against Granby-Canton at Granby High School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Morgan girls’ volleyball team improved its overall record to 8-9 on the season after claiming victory in all three of its matches last week. The Huskies earned five-set triumphs against Coginchaug and Guilford to go with a four-set win versus Cromwell during their perfect week on the court.
Morgan began last week’s action by netting a 3-2 road win over Coginchaug on Oct. 17. The Huskies defeated the Blue Devils by the final tally of 25-32, 25-23, 19-25, 29-31, 15-8.
Senior Kacey Edwards recorded 25 digs to go with 15 kills for Morgan in the victory. Senior Eva O’Sullivan handed out 36 assists and also had 15 digs with 5 kills. Senior Sofie Passante had 9 kills, 7 digs, and 3 aces; senior Maddie O’Sullivan finished the match with 17 digs and 1 ace; and junior Anna Fasulo punched up 14 digs for the Huskies.
The following day, the Huskies hosted Cromwell and toppled the Panthers by a 3-1 score. Morgan won the contest behind set scores of 25-10, 25-18, 22-25, 25-14.
Junior Julia Kelly posted 6 digs with 4 aces and 3 kills in the win. Senior Amelia Whelan had 4 kills and 4 aces, while junior Gigi Santos chipped in with 4 kills and 3 aces for Morgan.
Then on Oct. 20, Morgan played a non-conference match at Guilford and notched a 3-2 victory in the contest. The Huskies lost the first two sets to the Grizzlies, but stormed back to take the match in five by the final tally of 17-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 16-14.
Eva O’Sullivan had a big match by dishing out 36 assists to go with 6 kills for Morgan. Edwards finished the contest with 20 digs, 12 kills, and 2 aces. Junior Molly Vitola had 15 digs, while fellow junior Ainsley Corgan recorded 8 digs with 6 kills and 2 aces. Passante had 8 kills, senior Kendra Robayo posted 7 kills, and senior Courtney Vause added 8 digs on the night.
Morgan is hosting New London for its last match of the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m.
Girls’ Cross Country
Sophomore Natalia Estabrook earned All-Shoreline Conference Second Team accolades when she represented the Morgan girls’ cross country team at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship meet. The Huskies scored 207 points as a squad and finished in eighth place when the Shoreline meet was hosted at Hammonasset State Park in Madison on Oct. 20.
Estabrook finished in 19th place for the 5K race at the Shoreline Conference Championship. Estabrook ran a time of 21:00.4 on her way to making the All-Shoreline Conference Team on behalf of the Huskies.
Senior Iris Dunham finished in 41st place (23:32.1) for Morgan at Shorelines. Junior Gavin Gersz crossed the finish line in 46th place (24:33.0) for the Huskies. Junior Shania Weisse came in 60th place (30:38.9), and freshman Charlotte Racho finished in 62nd place (32:01.6) at the conference meet.
Morgan is competing in the Class SS State Championship at Wickham Park this weekend. The state meet takes place at 12:55 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Morgan boys’ cross country team competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Hammonasset State Park on Oct. 20. The Huskies finished in 10th place as a team by posting an overall score of 288 points at the meet.
Senior Nicholas Spaziano led the Huskies’ pack by finishing in 50th place with a time of 19:43.4 at Shorelines. Fellow senior Matthew Menacho finished in 53rd place with a mark of 19:58.4, while sophomore Luke Wyatt ran a time of 20:01.4 to take 57th place for Morgan.
Freshman Owen Lombardi came in 66th place (21:10.9) for the Huskies at the conference meet. Junior Robert Estabrook finished in 67th (21:49.8), junior Lucas Hoadley placed 70th (22:54.6), and freshman Anthony Strunjo finished in 71st place (23:22.6).
The Huskies will be taking part in the Class SS State Championship meet at Wickham Park on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team posted victories in a pair of home games last week and is now sporting an overall record of 11-3-1 in the 2022 season. The Huskies claimed a win over Valley Regional before defeating Old Lyme in their two matchups last week.
Morgan kicked off the past week of action by earning a 3-1 victory versus Valley Regional in a home game on Oct. 17. Senior Sebastian Kadlof scored Morgan’s first goal on an assist from fellow senior Steve Kinser in the 10th minute of the game. The Huskies held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Valley tied the score with a goal in the 47th minute of the contest, but Morgan grabbed a 2-1 advantage when junior Tyler Febbroriello scored from Kadlof in the 52nd minute. The Huskies increased their lead to 3-1 when Kadlof netted his second goal on an assist by senior Erik Berrera in the 70th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Liam Totten made 2 saves in net for Morgan in the win.
Then on Oct. 21, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and claimed a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats at the Indian River Complex. Freshman Jonny Gutierrez gave Morgan a 1-0 lead by scoring on an assist from Kinser in the 14th minute. Kadlof later scored from Gutierrez in the 38th minute for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Old Lyme cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal in the 41st minute. However, the Huskies responded when senior Matt Lopez netted a goal off a free kick to make it 3-1 in the 52nd minute of the game.
Old Lyme scored in the 71st minute to get back within one, but Morgan held the Wildcats off the board the rest of the way to solidify the 3-2 win. Totten made 3 saves in net for the Huskies.
Morgan will finish up its regular season by playing a road game against Hale-Ray this week.
Girls’ Soccer
The Morgan girls’ soccer team played three road games last week and came away from the road trip with two victories and a tie to boost its record to 9-3-2 on the season. The Huskies recorded shutouts over North Branford/Hale-Ray (NB/H-R) and Valley Regional before drawing with Old Lyme in last week’s matchups.
On Oct. 17, Morgan claimed a 3-0 road win over (NB/H-R) at North Branford High School. Rachel Spaziano scored an unassisted goal in the 11th minute of the game to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Olivia Ruotolo scored on an assist by Katerine Toledo in the 18th minute for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Senior Kate Gardner scored from fellow senior Emily Smith in the 61st minute to finish off the 3-0 victory. Junior goalie Samantha Way made 1 save in net for Morgan.
The following day, the Huskies traveled to Deep River to face Valley Regional and won the contest by a 3-0 score. Following a scoreless first half, junior Maeve Madura gave Morgan a 1-0 lead when she scored on an assist by Smith in the 50th minute of the matchup. Senior Caeley Ayer later scored from Smith in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0. Then in the 76th minute, Ayer netted her second goal on Smith’s third assist of the night for a 3-0 Morgan advantage. Way made 5 saves to get the shutout.
In its last game of the week, Morgan played Old Lyme to a 0-0 tie in a road tilt on Oct. 21. Way made 2 saves for another shutout in goal.
Morgan is hosting Old Saybrook for its regular-season finale on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
Field Hockey
The Morgan field hockey team played two road games last week and came away from the slate with one victory to put its record at 2-9-0-2 this season. Morgan took a defeat versus Fitch before rebounding with a win over East Catholic in recent action.
On Oct. 17, Morgan took a 4-0 loss versus Fitch in a road game. Two days later, the Huskies were back on the road to face East Catholic and prevailed by a 6-1 score in the matchup.
Morgan is hosting Norwich Free Academy for its regular-season finale on Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 27. The game takes place at 6 p.m. at the Indian River Complex.
