East Haven Girls’ Soccer Posts 8-0 Win Over Career-Hillhouse; Korenovsky Hits the Trails at SCC Championship

Girls’ Soccer

The East Haven girls’ soccer team notched its second win of the season when the Yellowjackets posted a convincing victory versus Career-Hillhouse last week. The Easties also took recent losses against Sheehan and Lauralton Hall for an overall record of 2-13 on the year.

On Oct. 17, East Haven took a 2-0 defeat to Sheehan in a road game. Two days later, the Yellowjackets hosted Lauralton Hall and lost to the Crusaders by a 3-0 score at East Haven High School.

Then on Oct. 21, the Easties were on the road to play Career-Hillhouse and won the game by the final score of 8-0 at Bowen Field in New Haven. Senior Gianna Mendez scored 3 goals for a hat trick and also had 2 assists for East Haven in the victory. The Yellowjackets also received goals from senior Sydney Herard, senior Gabby Gaetano, senior Julia Crisci, sophomore Fatima Magina, and sophomore Dalexa Pereanez.

Junior Gianna Castellano recorded 2 assists for the Easties in the win. Junior Val Sortito and sophomore Sofia Calixto chipped in with 1 assist apiece. Junior Jasmin Pinos made 4 saves to get the shutout in goal for Head Coach Jake Hackett’s team.

East Haven is playing a road game versus West Haven in its final matchup of the regular season this week.

Boys’ Soccer

The East Haven boys’ soccer team hosted three games on its home turf last week and came away with a tie and two losses to move to 2-11-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets earned a draw versus Lyman Hall before losing to Notre Dame-West Haven and Foran in their recent contests.

East Haven started off last week by playing Lyman Hall to a 1-1 tie in a home game on Oct. 18. The next day, the Yellowjackets hosted Notre Dame-West Haven and took a 6-0 defeat to the Green Knights.

The Easties wrapped up last week’s action by taking a 5-3 defeat to Foran in a Saturday morning home game on Oct. 22. Junior Marvin Cardenas scored one of East Haven’s goals by converting a penalty kick. Junior Dom Rivera and senior John Culcay also scored goals for the Yellowjackets.

East Haven will be on the road to face Platt Tech in its last game of the regular season this week. The Yellowjackets are playing at Platt Tech on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 3:45 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Junior Melania Korenovsky competed on behalf of the East Haven girls’ cross country program when she hit the trails to participate in the Southern Connecticut Championship last week. The conference meet took place at East Shore Park in New Haven on Oct. 19.

Korenovsky finished in 67th place out of 108 runners while representing the Yellowjackets at the SCC Championship. Korenovsky crossed the finish line with a time of 23 minutes and 57.7 seconds on her way to placing 67th in the meet.

Koreovsky had recently participated in the SCC Division Championships at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Sept. 29. Korenovsky competed in the Housatonic/Oronoque meet and ran a time of 24:28.10. Korenovsky finished in 13th place for the Oronoque Division and placed 38th overall with her performance in the divisional meet.

Girls’ Volleyball

The East Haven girls’ volleyball team came away with a split of last week’s matchups and now has a record of 4-13 on the season. The Yellowjackets took a loss to Hamden before rebounding with a shutout victory versus Hillhouse in recent action.

East Haven took a 3-0 road loss against Hamden on Oct. 17. The Green Dragons swept the match with set scores of 25-10, 25-11, 26-24.

Senior Nicole SanGiovanni posted 9 assists to go with 3 aces for the Yellowjackets in their match with Hamden. Sophomore Lily Saenz recorded 2 kills for East Haven in the contest.

On Oct. 19, the Easties hosted Hillhouse and won the match by a 3-0 score. The Yellowjackets swept Hillhouse by the final tally of 25-19, 25-22, 25-16 on their way to earning their fourth win of the year.

Freshman Eve Backhaus served up 7 aces and also had 3 digs for East Haven in the victory. Saenz finished the match with 3 kills, while sophomore Mia Abely had 1 kill to help Head Coach Craig Brown’s team get the sweep.

East Haven will finish its regular season by playing a home match against North Branford this week. The match takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 at East Haven High School.

Football

The East Haven football team traveled to Wallingford to take on Lyman Hall for an SCC Tier 3 contest on Oct. 21. The Yellowjackets took a 39-16 defeat versus Lyman Hall to put their overall record at 2-4 with a mark of 1-2 in the division. Lyman Hall improved to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in SCC Tier 3 this year.

Lyman Hall took a 2-0 lead over East Haven by scoring on a safety early in the first quarter. The Trojans made it 9-0 after scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run later in the period.

Lyman Hall used a 3-yard touchdown run to increase its lead to 16-0. The Yellowjackets responded when senior quarterback Dom Salato threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Dante Rodriguez. Sophomore Rocco D’Amato rushed for the 2-point conversion to make it 16-8 midway through the second quarter.

Lyman Hall scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass late in the first half. The Trojans then converted their 2-point try to take a 24-8 lead into halftime.

East Haven struck for a touchdown on its first drive of the second half. Salato tossed his second TD pass of the game to Rodriguez to help the Easties claw back within one score at 24-16.

Lyman Hall scored the final two touchdowns of the game to salt away the victory. The Trojans scored on an 11-yard touchdown rush and added insurance with a 5-yard TD run to win the game by a 39-16 score.

Salato finished the game 7-of-15 passing for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns for East Haven. Rodriguez had 4 receptions for 81 yards and 2 TDs.

D’Amato ran the ball 10 times for 51 yards and also had 3 catches for 58 yards in the game. Sophomore Nick Bilides had 13 carries for 35 yards on the night. Sophomore Alex Dombrowski added 31 return yards for Head Coach Scott Benoit’s squad.

Following a bye week, East Haven’s next game will be a road matchup against Wilbur Cross on Friday, Nov. 4. The contest kicks off at 6 p.m. at Bowen Field in New Haven. Wilbur Cross currently has a record of 1-5.
