Hand Girls’ Soccer Blanks West Haven, 2-0; Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey Also Post Shutouts

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team moved to 9-2-1 for the season after splitting a pair of recent games. The Tigers took a loss to Cheshire before bouncing back with a win against West Haven in last week’s action.

Hand took a 1-0 home loss to Cheshire on Oct. 11, bringing an end to the Tigers’ seven-game winning streak. However, the Tigers rebounded nicely when they posted a 2-0 victory over West Haven in another home game at the Surf Club on Oct. 13, marking the team’s eighth shutout of the season.

Freshman Kelly Parri scored Hand’s first goal on an assist from junior Charlie Lee in the team’s win against West Haven. Lee later scored on an assist by Parri to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage over the Blue Devils. Junior Lily Paine made 3 saves to get the shutout in net for Hand.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer team hosted Career-Hillhouse for its lone game on last week’s slate. The Tigers notched a 7-0 victory over the Panthers the Surf Club to boost their overall record to 5-5-1 on the year.

Hand is hosting Fairfield Prep for a contest on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then finish the regular season by playing three-straight road games with matchups against West Haven on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.; Jonathan Law on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.; and Shelton on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3:45 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey team netted a win against Sheehan in its lone matchup of the week last week. On Oct. 14, the Tigers hosted Sheehan and defeated the Titans by a 3-0 score to improve to 8-3-1 on the season.

Junior Jordan Kells scored 1 goal to go with 1 assist for Hand in lats week’s win over Sheehan. Junior Kelly Kilbourn and sophomore Addison Kosiewicz both scored 1 goal for the Tigers. Junior Faith Minickene earned the shutout in goal for Hand.

Hand is playing a home game versus Amity on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. After that, the Tigers will hit the road to face North Haven at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24 and Cheshire at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hand girls’ volleyball squad improved to 5-10 on the year after notching victories in two of its last three contests. The Tigers grabbed wins against Norwich Free Academy and Mercy to go with a loss to Lauralton Hall in three recent home matches.

Hand began last week by claiming a 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-9, 25-23) home win over Norwich Free Academy on Oct. 10. The next day, the Tigers hosted Lauralton Hall and took a 3-1 defeat in the matchup. Hand finished off the week by earning a 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-12, 14-25, 15-9) victory versus Mercy in another home match on Oct. 13.

Hand is hosting Cheshire for a matchup on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. The Tigers will then host Guilford on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m.; followed by a road match at Waterford on Wednesday, Oct. 26; and then a home match against Haddam-Killingworth at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team came away with a split of two recent meets to move to 8-1 this year. The Tigers earned a win over Hamden and then took a loss against Cheshire in last week’s matchups.

On Oct. 11, Hand claimed a 91-83 road win over Hamden. Three days later, the Tigers hit the road to face Cheshire and lost the meet by the score of 93-81 for their first defeat of the year.

Hand is facing Mercy on the road for its regular-season finale at the Middletown YMCA on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Hand girls’ cross country team hosted a meet at the Surf Club on Oct. 11. The Tigers scored 33 points and took a loss against Shelton, which scored 24 points, at the meet.

Freshman Annecy Vlieks came in second place for the race by clocking in with a time of 19:10 for the Tigers at last week’s meet. Sophomore Kylee Bolding finished in third place by running a time of 22:22. Junior Tessa Burch crossed the finish line with a time of 23:43 to finish in seventh place for Hand.

Next up for the Tigers in the SCC Championship meet that’s taking place this week.

Football

The Hand football team hosted Notre Dame-West Haven for an SCC Tier 1 game at the Surf Club on Oct. 14. The Tigers took a 34-7 defeat against the Green Knights at the Surf Club and are now 1-4 overall with a record of 0-3 in the division.

Hand will be squaring off with divisional opponent Fairfield Prep at the Surf Club on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Prep comes into the game with an overall record of 2-3 to go with a 2-0 record in SCC Tier 1 this year.
