The Old Saybrook field hockey team played two home games last week and came away with a pair of wins to boost its overall record to 9-4-1 this season. The Rams claimed a narrow victory against Valley Regional and then eked out a win versus Fitch in the team’s recent contests.
On Oct. 11, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and edged out the Warriors by a 1-0 score. Junior Amelia Sigersmith scored the lone goal of the game on an assist from freshman Kendall Dobartz in the second quarter to lift the Rams to the win. Senior Kate Molesky made 1 save in the second half to secure the shutout for Old Saybrook.
Then on Oct. 15, the Rams squared off with Fitch in a non-conference matchup and claimed a 2-1 win versus the Falcons at Old Saybrook High School. Dobratz converted a penalty stroke to put Old Saybrook up 1-0 in the second quarter. Then in the third quarter, senior Jessica Kidd scored from Sigersmith for the Rams’ second goal of the contest.
Senior Brianna Berdiales played goal in the first half for Old Saybrook. Molesky stepped into the cage for the latter stanza and had 1 save in the frame.
The Rams are playing a road game versus Norwich Free Academy on Saturday, Oct. 22 at noon. Old Saybrook will be back on the road to face Haddam-Killingworth in their regular-season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3:45 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team hosted non-conference opponent Canton for its lone matchup on last week’s schedule. The Rams battled Canton to a 2-2 tie at Old Saybrook High School on Oct. 14 to move to 9-0-1 for the season.
Senior Cameron DeAngelo converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute of the game to give Old Saybrook a 1-0 lead over Canton. The Rams took their one-goal advantage into the halftime break.
Canton tied the game by scoring a goal about 6 minutes into the second half. The Rams went up 2-1 when DeAngelo headed home a goal on an assist by fellow senior Bradley Kulmann. Canton came back to score a goal with 18 minutes left in the game to make it 2-2, which held up as the final score. Junior London Sweeney made 5 saves in goal for Old Saybrook in the game.
Old Saybrook will close out its regular season by playing four games this week. The Rams are hosting Haddam-Killingworth on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m., after which they will play road game against East Lyme on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.; Fitch on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.; and East Hampton on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team gained a split of two games last week and now has a record of 4-6-2 this season. The Rams notched a win versus North Branford/Hale-Ray and then took a defeat to East Hampton in last week’s contests.
Old Saybrook kicked off recent action by claiming a 3-0 road victory over the North Branford/Hale-Ray co-op squad at Hale-Ray High School on Oct. 11. Three days later, the Rams hosted East Hampton for a game at Old Saybrook High School and took a 3-2 loss against the Bellringers.
Old Saybrook is on the road to play Haddam-Killingworth at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21. The Rams will then play a home game with Old Lyme on Monday, Oct. 24, followed by a road game against Morgan on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook boys’ cross country team competed in the Wickham Invitational that was hosted at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 8. The Rams finished in 10th place as a team at the meet.
Junior Parker Cook came in sixth place by running a time of 17:22 for Old Saybrook at the Wickham Invitational. The Rams’ pack of runners in the meet also included junior Nwang Choegyal (18:47), senior Logan Worman (19:47), sophomore Everett Miller (19:50), junior Gabe Rutan (21:13), and sophomore Jack Lowry (22:40). Each one of Old Saybrook’s athletes improved upon their times from last year’s Wickham Invitational meet.
Next up for the Rams is the Shoreline Conference Championship that’s taking place at Hammonasset Park in Madison on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook girls’ cross country team was represented by several athletes when the Wickham Invitational took place at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 8.
Junior Carlina Castro claimed 18th place for Old Saybrook by crossing the finish line with a time of 22:07 at the Wickham Invitational. Also traversing the trails for the Rams at the meet were senior Catherine Minegar (23:02), senior Vicki Carrica (23:40), and sophomore Cat Pamment (26:06).
Old Saybrook will be participating in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Hammonasset Park in Madison at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20.
Football
The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team had a bye week last week. The Rams’ next contest will be a home game versus divisional opponent Cromwell-Portland on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at Old Saybrook High School. OS-W comes into the game with an overall record of 0-5 and a record of 0-4 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division. Cromwell-Portland has an overall mark of 5-0 and is 4-0 in the division.
