Morgan Boys’ Soccer Scores Two Wins on the Pitch; Girls’ Soccer Earns 2-1 Victory Versus Portland

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team improved to 9-3-1 on the year after earning victories in both of its matchups on last week’s schedule. The Huskies netted a shutout win versus Portland before winning a close one over Haddam-Killingworth in their two recent games.

Morgan began last week by posting a 2-0 shutout at Portland on Oct. 10. Senior Joe Morse gave Morgan a 1-0 lead by scoring a goal on an assist from freshman Jeremy Medranda in the 29th minute of the game. Senior Matt Lopez made it 2-0 by scoring from Medranda in the 43rd minute of the contest. Freshman goalie Liam Totten made 7 saves to earn the shutout in net for the Huskies.

Then on Oct. 14, the Huskies hosted Haddam-Killingworth and claimed a 1-0 victory against the Cougars at the Indian River Complex. Gutierrez scored the lone goal of the game on an assist from Kadlof in the 52nd minute of the matchup. Totten made 3 saves in goal for the shutout.

During the previous week’s action, Morgan played East Lyme to a 2-2 tie in a home game on Oct. 8. The Huskies got on the board with an own-goal by East Lyme that was created by pressure from freshman Jonny Gutierrez. Later in the game, Gutierrez scored on an assist from senior Sebastian Kadlof. Totten made 4 saves for the Huskies in the contest.

Morgan is hosting Old Lyme for a matchup on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The Huskies will then face Hale-Ray on the road for the regular-season final on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer squad hit the pitch to play a pair of contests last week and gained a split of the set to put its record at 7-3-1 on the season. The Huskies notched a close win over Portland and then too a loss to Plainfield to make for an even week on the field.

On Oct. 11, Morgan hosted Portland and edged out the Highlanders by a 2-1 score on Senior Night at the Indian River Complex. The Huskies honored their senior athletes before the game, and each member of the senior class was in the starting lineup for Morgan for the contest. Morgan’s seniors are captains Eve Gardner and Katie Martin, along with Caeley Ayer, Emily Smith, Logan Pernal, and Melissa Scheurer.

Ayer put the Huskies up 1-0 by scoring on an assist from sophomore Rachel Spaziano in the 14th minute of the game. Martin made it 2-0 by scoring an unassisted goal for Morgan in the 54th minute, after which Portland scored its lone goal for the 2-1 final. Junior goalie Samantha Way made 4 saves in net for Morgan.

Then on Oct. 15, the Huskies hit the road to face non-conference opponent Plainfield and took a 5-0 loss in the contest.

Morgan is playing a road game against Old Lyme on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3:45 p.m. The Huskies will then host Cromwell on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a home game versus Old Saybrook for their regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Field Hockey

The Morgan field hockey team took two defeats last week, one of which came in overtime, to put its overall record at 1-7-0-2 on the season. The Huskies lost a contest against North Branford and then took an overtime loss versus Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) in last week’s games.

Morgan took a 6-0 road loss to North Branford on Oct. 11. Two days later, the Huskies were back on the road to face the W-OL co-op squad and lost to the Knights by a 2-1 score in overtime.

Senior Brooke Carlisle scored Morgan’s goal when the Huskies faced W-OL last week. Junior Jill DeMaio made 8 saves in net for the Huskies.

Morgan is playing three upcoming home games to complete its regular season. The Huskies are hosting Somers-Rockville on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.; Lyman Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3:45 p.m.; and Norwich Free Academy for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Morgan girls’ volleyball team took three losses last week and is now 5-9 on the season. The Huskies lost contests against Valley Regional, East Hampton, and Hale-Ray in last week’s matches.

On Oct. 10, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and lost to the Warriors by a 3-2 score. Valley rallied to win the match with scores of 22-25, 8-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-5.

Then on Oct. 12, the Huskies played a road match versus East Hampton and took a 3-1 defeat to the Bellringers. Two days later, Morgan took a 3-0 loss to Hale-Ray in a home match.

Morgan is hosting Guilford for a match on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. After that, the Huskies had a road match versus Haddam-Killingworth at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24; a home match with Montville on Wednesday, Oct. 26; and then a home match against New London at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Football

The Morgan football team was on the bye week last week. The Huskies will return to action by playing a road game against divisional opponent Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Coginchaug High School. Morgan enters the game with an overall record of 1-4 and a mark of 1-3 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division. The Blue Devils are 1-4 overall with a divisional mark of 1-2.
