Knights’ Field Hockey Posts Three OT Victories; Girls’ Soccer Shuts Out Two Opponents

Field Hockey

The Westbrook-Old Lyme (W-OL) co-op field hockey team posted a trio of overtime victories to improve their record to 6-5-2 this year. The Knights edged out both Haddam-Killingworth and Morgan in OT before earning an overtime win versus Killingly in recent action.

W-OL began last week by claiming a 1-0 home win versus Haddam-Killingworth in overtime on Oct. 11. Senior Delaney Belcourt won it for the Knights when she scored an unassisted goal at the 8:15 mark of the overtime period. Junior Abby Demers made 4 saves in net to get the shutout for W-OL.

Two days later, the Knights hosted Morgan and notched a 1-0 overtime victory versus the Huskies at Westbrook High School. Senior Caroline Dias netted an unassisted goal at the 8:25 mark of OT to give W-OL the win. Freshman Alyssa Leandri scored the other goal for the Knights when she found the back of the net during the fourth quarter. Senior Myan Nguyen recorded an assist in the game. Demers made 2 saves in goal for W-OL.

Then on Oct. 15, the W-OL played a non-conference road game against Killingly and posted a 2-1 overtime win in the contest. Freshman Brooke Oulette scored the game-winning goal for the Knights off a penalty corner in the OT period. Nguyen and senior Halley Pierson had the assists on the score. Leandri also scored a goal in the game. Demers made 1 saves in the cage.

The Knights will be on the road to face Newington in their last game of the regular season this week. The game takes place at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.

Girls’ Soccer

The Westbrook girls’ soccer team recorded shutouts in both of its home games last week to improve its overall record to 5-7-1 on the season. The Knights posted a shutout over Amistad and then blanked Harding-Bassick in recent action.

Westbrook kicked off last week’s action by earning a 6-0 shutout against Amistad in a home game on Oct. 12. Two days later, the Knights hosted the Harding-Bassick co-op squad and won the contest by an identical 6-0 score at Westbrook High School.

Westbrook will travel to Durham to face Coginchaug for its regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 21. The game gets underway at 3:45 p.m. at Coginchaug High School.

Boys’ Soccer

The Westbrook boys’ soccer team split a pair of recent contests and now has a record of 3-7-2 this season. The Knights earned a shutout victory versus Hale-Ray and then took a defeat versus Valley Regional last week.

On Oct. 11, Westbrook hosted Hale-Ray and blanked the Noises by the final score of 3-0. Senior Ryan Engels made 5 saves to get the shutout in goal for Westbrook. Senior Grant Libeson, junior Elliot Koplas, and freshman Didier Lobo scored the goals for the Knights in the victory. Libeson and junior Doug Perrone-Gray each had an assist.

Two days later, Westbrook traveled to Deep River to play Valley Regional and took a 3-0 loss to the Warriors.

Westbrook has a home game against Coginchaug on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 3:45 p.m. The Knights will then be on the road to face Harding on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. and Amistad on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.
