North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Notches Two Victories; Girls’ Soccer Earns Win Versus West Haven
Girls’ Volleyball
The North Haven girls’ volleyball team improved its overall record to 8-4 on the season after winning two of its three matches last week. The Nighthawks scored victories over Sheehan and East Haven to go with a loss against Cheshire in recent action.
North Haven opened up the week by claiming a 3-0 home win versus Sheehan on Oct. 4. The Nighthawks swept the contest by the final tally of 25-22, 25-17, 25-16.
Senior Kayla Balisciano served up 6 aces to go with 8 kills and 10 digs for North Haven in the victory. Senior Sarah Herrera recorded 26 assists and had 1 ace in the matchup. Senior Sophia Vauiso posted 8 kills with 1 block on the night.
On Oct. 6, North Haven played a road match against Cheshire and took a 3-0 defeat to the Rams. Balisicano had 6 digs and 5 kills for the Nighthawks in the contest. Vauiso finished the match with 6 kills and 1 block.
The very next day, the Nighthawks were back on the road to face East Haven and notched a 3-0 shutout over the Yellowjackets. North Haven swept the match behind set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.
Herrera dished out 19 assists and also had 4 digs with 2 aces and 1 kill in the matchup. Balisciano finished the contest with 13 digs, 11 kills, and 4 aces. Senior Maren Hill had 5 kills, 1 ace, and 1 dig for the Nighthawks.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Haven girls’ soccer team hit the field to play matchups against Shelton and West Haven last week. The Nighthawks came away from the slate with a split after taking a loss to Shelton and then defeating West Haven, putting their overall record at 6-5 on the year.
In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 3-1 defeat versus Shelton in a road game on Oct. 3. Junior Cameron Ryan scored the lone goal of the game for the Nighthawks.
Then on Oct. 7, the Nighthawks hosted West Haven and claimed a 2-1 win against the Blue Devils at North Haven Middle School. North Haven grabbed a 1-0 lead when Ryan scored from senior Giavanna Damone in the 30th minute of the game. The Nighthawks made it 2-0 after Damone converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
West Haven cut the deficit to 2-1 by scoring a goal in the 58th minute. However, North Haven was able to hold the Blue Devils off the board the rest of the way and walk away with the one-goal victory.
Junior Erika Fronte made 9 saves in net for North Haven. Head Coach Gary Collins said that the Nighthawks also received excellent performances from senior Ilana Blumenthal, senior Aisling Pretty, senior Samantha Adams, junior Molly Marottolo, junior Rebecca Ford, junior Anna Mortali, sophomore Hannah Bernardo, sophomore Alison Palmieri, sophomore Andrea August, freshman Faith Nicholas, and freshman Carly Ryan in the win.
Boys’ Soccer
The North Haven boys’ soccer team took two defeats last week to move to 1-9 on the season. North Haven took a loss against Shelton and then lost Foran in last week’s contests.
On Oct. 3, the Nighthawks played a road game against Shelton and lost a 3-0 decision to the Gaels. Then on Oct. 7, the Nighthawks hosted Foran and took a 2-1 defeat to the Lions at North Haven Middle School.
Field Hockey
The North Haven field hockey team hit the road to face off against Branford for an SCC game on Oct. 4. The Nighthawks dropped a 2-0 decision to the Hornets to put their overall record at 4-6 for the season.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The North Haven girls’ swimming team moved to 4-3 on the season after taking defeats in two recent home meets. The Nighthawks took a loss to Hand and then lost against Amity in last week’s meets.
On Oct. 4, North Haven hosted Hand and took a 99-83 loss to the Tigers at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Senior Mikayla Rapuano claimed first place in the 50 freestyle (27.12) and the 100 freestyle (1:01.97) for North Haven at the meet. Senior Alice Scalmani finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:18.44) and also won the 500 freestyle (5:38.99) for the Nighthawks. Sophomore Danielle Rapuano took first place in the diving competition with a score of 173.30 points.
North Haven’s 200 medley relay of senior Mackenzie Alogna, Scalmani, Rapuano, and sophomore Giada Garofalo finished in first place (2:04.69) for North Haven versus Hand. The Nighthawks’ 200 freestyle relay of Rapuano, Garofalo, senior Tara Stoeffler, and Scalmani claimed first place (1:53.70); and the 400 freestyle relay featuring senior Victoria Pachnik, junior Madisen Karavas, Stoeffler, and Alogna also finished first (4:28.56).
Three days later, the Nighthawks had a home meet with Amity and took a 90-86 defeat to the Spartans. Mikayla Rapuano finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:18.41) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.80) for North Haven. Scalmani claimed first place in the 100 backstroke (1:13.80) on behalf of the Nighthawks.
North Haven’s 200 freestyle relay of Stoeffler, Alogna, Pachnik, and Karaves finished first (2:04.68) at the meet. The Nighthawks’ 400 freestyle relay featuring freshman Amelia Bautz, sophomore Abigail Lorusso, freshman Angelina Valentino, and sophomore Avery Cullen also earned top honors (5:18.72).
Boys’ Cross Country
The North Haven boys’ cross country team hit the trails to compete in the Lauralton Classic Invitational that was hosted at Eisenhower Park in Milford on Oct. 3. The Nighthawks posted a team score of 119 points to finish in sixth place out of the seven teams that participated in the meet. Junior Nico Boyle came in fourth place for the race by crossing the finish line with a time of 17:39 for North Haven.
Girls’ Cross Country
The North Haven girls’ cross country team recently took part in the Lauralton Classic Invitational at was held on Oct. 3 at Eisenhower Park in Milford. North Haven scored 121 points as a team and came in sixth place among a pack of seven squads at the invitational meet.
Football
The North Haven football team was on the bye week for last week. The Nighthawks will return to the gridiron to host Harding for a contest on Friday, Oct. 14. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. under the lights at North Haven Middle School. North Haven enters the matchup with a record of 3-1, while Harding has an overall mark of 0-4 on the year.
