The East Haven football team traveled to Milford to take on Foran for an SCC Tier 3 clash on Oct. 7. The Yellowjackets took a 42-8 defeat versus the Lions and are now 2-3 overall on the season with a record of 1-1 in the division. Foran improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SCC Tier 3 with the win.
Foran scored 2 touchdowns in the first quarter and then added 3 touchdowns during the second quarter to take a 35-0 halftime advantage over East Haven. Sophomore Nick Bilides ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to account for the Yellowjackets’ lone TD of the night. East Haven was playing this game without senior captains Dom Salato and Jason Toth, who were both sidelined due to injuries.
Foran used a 5-yard touchdown run to take an early lead over East Haven. Later in the first quarter, Foran scored on an 8-yard TD run and then converted the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead after one.
The Lions rushed for a 7-yard touchdown to increase their lead to 21-0 in the second quarter. Foran’s quarterback went on to throw a 30-yard touchdown pass and then hit on a 27-yard TD pass to give the Lions a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Foran scored its final touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run in the third quarter, taking a 42-0 advantage into the fourth. In the final period, Bilides scored on a 5-yard touchdown rush for East Haven to put the Yellowjackets on the board. Bilides followed by running in the 2-point conversion to make the score 42-8, which held up as the final.
Bilides finished the game with 18 carries and 95 yards for East Haven. Sophomore Alex Dombrowski rushed for 39 yards, while fellow sophomore Rocco D’Amato added 18 yards on the ground. On defense, senior Mekhi Morrison made 8 tackles, and sophomore Dante Rodriguez had 6 tackles with an interception for the Yellowjackets.
East Haven is on the bye week for this week. The Yellowjackets will return to the gridiron for a road game against SCC Tier 3 opponent Lyman Hall on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Lyman Hall comes into the game with an overall record of 1-3 and is 0-2 in the division this year.
Girls’ Volleyball
The East Haven girls’ volleyball team three defeats last week to put its record at 2-10 for the 2022 season. The Yellowjackets lost contests against Branford, Lauralton Hall, and North Haven in last week’s action.
East Haven took a 3-0 road loss to Branford in its first matchup of the week on Oct. 3. The Hornets swept the match by the scores of 25-10, 25-18, 25-5.
Senior Nicole SanGiovanni had 4 assists and 1 ace for the Yellowjackets in their match versus Branford. Junior Ava Avena finished the match with 5 assists and 1 block.
On Oct. 15, East Haven hosted Lauralton Hall and took a 3-0 defeat to the Crusaders. The Yellowjackets went on to play a home match against North Haven and lost to the Nighthawks by a 3-0 score.
East Haven is hosting Career for a Saturday morning match on Oct. 15 at 11:15 a.m. The Yellowjackets will then face Hamden on the road on Monday, Oct. 17 at 5:15 p.m., followed by a home match with Hillhouse at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Boys’ Soccer
The East Haven boys’ soccer team hosted Branford for its lone matchup of the week last week. The Yellowjackets took a 4-1 loss to the Hornets at East Haven High School to move to 2-7 on the year.
East Haven is playing a road game versus Jonathan Law on Friday, Oct. 14 at 4:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets will then host Lyman Hall on Monday, Oct. 17, after which they will face Notre Dame-West Haven at home on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 3:45 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The East Haven girls’ soccer team moved to 1-10 on the season after taking two recent defeats. The Yellowjackets lost a contest against Branford and then took a loss to Hand in their last two games.
On Oct. 3, East Haven faced Branford on the road and took a 7-1 defeat against the Hornets. Senior Gianna Mendez recorded East Haven’s lone score of the day on a penalty kick in the second half of the game.
Then on Oct. 7, the Yellowjackets hosted Hand and took a 3-0 defeat to the Tigers at East Haven High School.
East Haven is on the road to face Sheehan on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. After that, the Yellowjackets are playing a home game versus Lauralton Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The East Haven-Cross-Hillhouse (EH-C-H) co-op girls’ swimming and diving team had two road meets on its schedule last week. The Yellowjackets took two defeats by losing contests against Shelton and Guilford in recent action.
EH-C-H started off the week by taking an 87-70 road loss to Shelton at the Shelton Community Center on Oct. 3. Three days later, the Yellowjackets had a road meet versus Guilford and took a 91-60 defeat to the Grizzlies at the Walsh Intermediate Pool.
Senior Julia Rosado claimed first place in the 200 freestyle (2:09.29) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.02) for the Yellowjackets against Guilford. Senior Abby Brooks won the 100 backstroke (1:17.82), and junior Kate Kim finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.82) for EH-C-H. The Yellowjackets’ 200 freestyle relay of freshman Diana Melnyk, freshman Maddie Bourdeau, senior Nicole Irizarry, and Brooks also took first place (1:57.85).
Bourdeau claimed second place in the 500 freestyle (6:32.39) for the Yellowjackets at the meet. Melnyk finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:22.24) and also placed third in the 200 individual medley (3:01.90). Kim finished third in the 50 freestyle (28.64), while junior Alexis Lamprea took third place in the 100 backstroke (1:24.07).
The Yellowjackets’ 200 freestyle relay of Irizarry, Lamprea, Brooks, and junior Iavanna Cruz finished in second place (2:21.15) for EH-C-H. The 200 medley relay featuring Brooks, Kim, Rosado, and Melynk finished in third place (2:12.42).
EH-C-H is facing Lyman Hall at Sheehan High School on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. The Yellowjackets will then compete against Sacred Heart Academy in another road meet on Monday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. at Albertus Magnus College.
