Old Saybrook Field Hockey Sees a Two-Win Week; Cross Country Competes at Shoreline Small Schools Meet
Field Hockey
The Old Saybrook field hockey team claimed victory in both of its games last week to boost its record to 6-2-1 for the 2022 season. The Rams earned an overtime win over Granby before defeating Morgan in recent action.
Old Saybrook began its week by claiming a 2-1 overtime victory against Granby in a home game on Sept. 27. Sophomore Lila Cadley scored the first goal for the Rams in the second quarter. Junior Amelia Sigersmith won the game for Old Saybrook when she scored a goal 4 minutes into the overtime period on an assist from freshman Kendall Dobratz.
Senior Kate Molesky and fellow senior goalie Brianna Berdiales both saw time in net for Head Coach Nancy Gatta’s team. Berdiales played the first half and OT and made 3 saves in the game. Molesky held down the net during the second half and had 5 saves in the stanza.
Two days later, the Rams played a road game versus Morgan and posted a 3-0 shutout over the Huskies at the Indian River Complex in Clinton. Senior Maggie Ashe scored 2 goals for Old Saybrook with assists coming from Sigersmith and senior Shelby Dorothy. Dobratz also had a goal in the game, and Dorothy handed out the assist on that score, as well.
Berdiales made 1 save in the cage during the first half of the matchup. Molesky played goal in the second half and stopped 2 shots to help the Rams secure the shutout.
Old Saybrook is playing a game at North Branford on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. and will then be back on the road to face Suffield on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. After that, the Rams are hosting Valley Regional for a matchup at Old Saybrook High School on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook boys’ cross country squad posted a third-place finish when the Rams ran at the Shoreline Conference Small Schools Meet at Hale-Ray High School on Sept. 28. Old Saybrook tallied a team score of 79 points to take third place at the meet, finishing ahead of Coginchaug (91) and Portland (108) and placing behind Hale-Ray (29) and Old Lyme (50).
Junior Parker Cook claimed second place in the race for the Rams at last week’s meet. Cook crossed the finish line with a time of 17:34 on his way to earning runner-up honors.
Junior Ngwang Choegyal finished in 15th place (19:48) for Old Saybrook in the meet. Sophomore Everett Miller finished in 17th (19:55), while senior Logan Worman recorded a 20th-place performance (20:15).
Junior Gabriel Rutan finished in 25th place (21:15) at the meet. Sophomore Jack Lowry took 30th place (22:52) for Head Coach Pete Capezzone’s team.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Old Saybrook girls’ cross country team competed against four opponents in the Shoreline Conference Small Schools meet that was held in Moodus on Sept. 28. The Rams finished third in the pack by scoring 74 points to come in ahead of Portland (77) and Coginchaug (91), while placing behind Old Lyme (36) and Hale-Ray (53).
Junior Carlina Castro led the Rams by taking eighth place with a time of 23:24 at the meet. Senior Catherine Minegar finished in 11th place (23:28), while fellow senior Vicki Carrica came in 14th place (24:40).
Sophomore Cat Pamment finished in 19th place (25:53) for Old Saybrook. Freshman Cassie Garcia finished in 22nd (26:26) on behalf of the Rams.
Girls’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer squad picked up its second win of the year when the Rams shut out the North Branford/Hale-Ray co-op team by a 3-0 score last week. Old Saybrook went on to take a close loss versus Morgan to move to 2-3-2 for the fall season.
The Rams started off the week by hosting North Branford/Hale-Ray and notched a 3-0 victory over the co-op squad on Sept. 27. Senior Elizabeth Ryan, junior Alex Benni, and junior Lauren Dobratz scored the goals for Old Saybrook in the game.
Senior Allie Lamotte handed out 2 assists for the Rams, while Ryan had 1 assist in the victory. Senior Abby Colella and sophomore Kylie Lake combined for a clean sheet in goal for Head Coach Steve Roslonek’s team.
Then on Sept. 30, the Rams faced Morgan for home game Old Saybrook High School and took a 1-0 defeat against the Huskies.
Old Saybrook is playing a road game versus Cromwell on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. The Rams will return to the road for a rematch with North Branford/Hale-Ray at Hale-Ray High School on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
Football
The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team traveled to Durham to square off against the Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton co-op team for a divisional duel on Oct. 1. The Rams took a 31-0 defeat against the Blue Devils at Coginchaug High School to move to 0-4 overall with a record of 0-4 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division this year.
The Rams will return to the gridiron to play a road game versus the CREC co-op team, which has a record of 1-3, on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m.
