The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ volleyball team hit the court to play three matches last week and walked off the floor with a trio of victories to boost their record to 5-2 this year. H-K claimed victories against North Branford and Valley Regional before defeating East Hampton in last week’s action.
H-K started off last week by recording a 3-0 shutout at North Branford on Sept. 19. The Cougars won all 3 sets by the final tally of 25-23 on their way to sweeping the Thunderbirds.
Junior Sammy Minickene recorded 12 service points, to go with 6 aces, 4 kills, and 7 digs for H-K. Senior Kaleigh Bodak had 10 service points, 4 aces, 7 kills, and 13 assists; junior Reese Timothy posted 8 service points with 3 aces, 9 kills, and 13 assists; and senior Payton Yazmer had 9 service points, 3 aces, 5 kills and 11 digs in the victory.
Then on Sept. 21, the Cougars hosted Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors by a 3-1 final. The Cougars took the match behind set scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14.
Payton Yazmer finished the match 14 service points, 5 aces, 7 kills, and 14 digs to help H-K prevail. Minickene had 12 service points to go along with 4 aces, 11 kills, and 14 digs in the win. Senior Audra Yazmer had 6 kills, 5 solo blocks, and 8 kills; Bodak netted 11 service points with 5 aces, 5 kills, 15 assists, and 9 digs; and Timothy had 9 service points, 3 aces, 8 kills, 16 assists and, 14 digs.
Two days later, H-K played a home match versus East Hampton and edged out the Bellringers by a 3-2 score in a 5-set thriller. The Cougars won the back-and-forth contest by the final count of 21-25, 25-13, 25-16, 23-25, 15-8.
Bodak had a big night by putting up 18 service points that included 2 aces on top of her 10 kills and 27 assists. Payton Yazmer had 13 service points, 7 aces, 10 kills, 3 assists, and 7 digs; Timothy tallied 5 service points with 1 ace, 14 kills, 17 assists, and 9 digs; and sophomore Caley Napoletano had chipped in with service points and 10 digs for Head Coach Robin Callender’s team.
H-K’s next contest is against Morgan at home on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer team was on the road for a trio of away games in last week’s action. The Cougars were victorious in two of those three contests to elevate their record to 3-2-1 for the 2022 season.
On Sept. 19, H-K traveled to Deep River to face Valley Regional and lost to the Warriors by a 4-1 score. Senior Julia Favalora scored H-K’s goal in the game.
Then on Sept. 22, the Cougars played a road game versus Old Lyme and posted a 1-0 shutout over the Wildcats. The very next day, H-K was back on the road to take on non-conference opponent Platt Tech and recorded a 4-0 shutout in the contest.
Haddam-Killingworth’s road trip continues with three more games away from home this week. The Cougars at playing at Wilbur Cross on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 3:45 p.m.; in Westbrook on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:45 p.m.; and at Canton on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7:15 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ soccer team moved to 4-1 on the season after gaining a split of last week’s games. The Cougars netted a shutout against Valley Regional and then took a defeat to Old Lyme in their last two matchups.
H-K kicked off last week by earning a 2-0 home win versus Valley Regional on Sept. 20. Senior Jonah Lowrey and sophomore Ryan Lasusa scored the goals for the Cougars in the victory. Senior goalie Jack Straka made 4 saves to get the shutout in net.
Three days later, the Cougars were on the road to face Old Lyme and lost to the Wildcats by the final score of 3-1.
H-K is hosting Westbrook for a home game on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:45 p.m. After that, the Cougars will hit the road for a non-conference showdown with Manchester at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.
Field Hockey
The Haddam-Killingworth field hockey team played three games last week and came away from the slate with a win, a loss, and a draw to put their overall record at 3-2-1 on the season. The Cougars earned a win versus Mercy, played Westbrook-Old Lyme to a tie, and then took a loss to Old Saybrook in their last three games.
H-K began last week by claiming a 1-0 home win over Mercy on Sept. 19. The following day, the Cougars hosted the Westbrook-Old Lyme co-op squad and battled the Knights to a 0-0 draw. H-K went on to play a road game versus Old Saybrook and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Rams.
H-K will be on the road to face Newington on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 3:45 p.m. After that, the Cougars are hosting Valley Regional on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:45 p.m.; will play a road game against Canton at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3; and will then return home to face North Branford on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 3:45 p.m.
Football
The Haddam-Killingworth football team hosted Cromwell-Portland (C-P) for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division contest on Sept. 23. The Cougars took a 35-0 defeat versus the Panthers at H-K High School to move to 1-2 overall with a mark of 1-2 in divisional play this fall.
C-P scored the first touchdown of the game in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead after one. The Panthers then scored a pair of touchdowns during the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into halftime. C-P went on to score a touchdown in the third quarter and another TD in the fourth to finish off the 35-0 victory
H-K is on the bye week this week. The Cougars will be back in action to face the Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby co-op team at Windsor Locks High School on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
