The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team began its first season with two new coaches last week. The Tigers, who are being led by co-coaches Scott Butler and Christina Forristall this year, had road meets versus Lyman Hall and Foran and came away with a win and a tie during the opening week of their campaign.
Hand started the season by earning a 93-93 tie with Lyman Hall at Sheehan High School on Sept. 13. The top point scorers for the Tigers were junior Haley Wines, sophomore Lillian Miller, sophomore Samy Chemacki, sophomore Seorin Kim, and sophomore Arianna Potter.
Two days later, the Tigers were back on the road to face Foran and notched a victory versus the Lions. Chemacki claimed first place in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle for Hand. Junior Hadley Reiss took third place in the diving and qualified for the state meet in only her second high school diving performance.
Hand’s next matchup is a road meet against the East Haven-Cross-Hillhouse co-op squad at Wilbur Cross High School on Friday, Sept. 23 at 3:45 p.m.
Field Hockey
The Hand field hockey team traveled to Middletown to face Mercy in its lone game of the week last week. Hand notched a 3-0 win in the battle of the Tigers at Mercy High School to put its record at 1-1 on the year.
Up next for the Tigers is a road game versus Mercy at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16. Hand will then face Sacred Heart Academy on the road at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Hand girls’ volleyball team gained a split of last week’s matches to move to 1-3 for the 2022 season. The Tigers took a five-set loss to Jonathan Law before bouncing back with a sweep versus Sheehan in recent action.
Hand played a road match against Jonathan Law on Sept. 14 and was edged out by a 3-2 final in the contest. The very next day, the Tigers hosted Sheehan and posted a 3-0 shutout over the Titans for their first victory of the year.
Hand is playing an away game against Mercy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. After that, the Tigers are back on the road to face Cheshire on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The Hand girls’ soccer squad hit the pitch to take on East Haven and Cheshire in last week’s action. The Tigers came away from the slate with a split by earning a convincing with over East Haven and then taking a loss Cheshire, giving the team a 1-1-1 record on the season.
Hand kicked off its week by notching an 8-0 shutout against East Haven in a home game at the Surf Club on Sept. 13. Then on Sept. 16, the Tigers were on the road to face Cheshire and took a 5-0 defeat to the Rams.
Hand is hosting Sacred Heart Academy for its next game on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. After that, Hand is playing a home game versus Wilbur Cross on Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The Hand boys’ soccer team took two defeats last week and is now 0-3 on the season. The Tigers lost contests against Xavier and Shelton their last two matches.
On Sept. 13, Hand traveled to Middletown to play Xavier and took a 4-1 loss to the Falcons. Senior Matt Ciampini scored the goal for the Tigers in the game
Then on Sept. 15, Hand played a home match versus Shelton and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Gaels.
The Tigers are on the road to play Wilbur Cross at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22. Hand will then play a road game versus Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. Hand then returns home to host West Haven at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Football
The Hand football team hit the road to take on Shelton for an SCC Tier 1 clash on Sept. 16. The Tigers took a 28-0 defeat against the Gaels at Finn Stadium to put their overall record at 1-1 with a mark of 0-1 in the division.
Senior Will Kleine competed 8 passes for 116 yards and also ran the ball 8 times for 50 yards for Hand versus Shelton. Senior Sam Sisk had 5 catches for 39 yards, senior Alex Cushing had 2 receptions for 77 yards, and junior Owen Preskar caught 4 passes for 29 yards.
Junior Aidan Dolan recorded a sack on defense for the Tigers. Cushing made 12 tackles, while senior Wesley Selmani had 10 tackles. Senior John Hayden had 9 tackles, senior Ryan Milliard made 7 tackles, and junior Gavin Wagner had 6 tackles for the Tigers
Hand will return to the field to host Newtown (1-1) for a non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 23. The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. under the Friday night lights at the Surf Club.
