Morgan Football Defeats H-K for First Victory; Boys’ Soccer Raises Record to 4-0

The Morgan football team hosted divisional opponent Haddam-Killingworth for a Saturday afternoon contest at the Peters Complex on Sept. 17. Morgan notched a 30-23 victory versus the Cougars in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division matchup and is now 1-1 overall with a record of 1-1 in the division this year.
H-K scored the first 5 touchdowns of the game and held a 30-0 lead over H-K in the fourth quarter. The Cougars rallied by scoring 3-straight TDs to cut the lead to 30-23, but the Huskies recovered H-K’s onside kick in the final minutes of the game and went on to get their first win of the year.
Junior Tyler Baldwin gave Morgan a 6-0 lead by rushing for a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Baldwin then found senior Jake Caprio for a 9-yard TD pass in the second quarter to make it 12-0, which was the score at halftime.
In the third quarter, sophomore Griffin Ranaudo broke off a 30-yard touchdown run to increase Morgan’s lead to 18-0. Later in the frame, junior Casey Corrigan scored on a 2-yard run to make it 24-0 entering the fourth.
Baldwin connected with junior John Nye on 43-yard TD strike for a 30-0 advantage in the fourth quarter. H-K responded with 3 touchdowns in a row to make it a 1-score game, but Morgan was able to hang on for the 30-23 victory.
Morgan’s next game is a divisional matchup versus Valley Regional-Old Lyme on Sept. 13. The game is slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Valley Regional High School in Deep River.
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team continued its strong start to the season by recording a pair of victories last week. The Huskies posted a shutout over Coginchaug and then won a close contest versus Cromwell to improve to 4-0 on the year.
In its first game of the week, Morgan earned a 7-0 road victory against Coginchaug on Sept. 13. Senior Sebastian Kadlof scored 2 goals and had 2 assists for the Huskies in the win. Freshman Emiliano Miranda had a 2 goal and an assist, freshman Jonny Gutierrez also scored 2 goals, and freshman Jeremy Medranda added a goal for the Huskies.
Sophomore Cinar Yucel handed out 2 assists for Morgan versus Coginchaug. Junior Tyler Febbroriello also contributed an assist for Head Coach Ross Demay’s squad. Freshman Liam Totten and junior Jack Bousquet shared the goalkeeping duties with Bousquet making 1 save in the game.
On Sept. 16, Morgan hosted Cromwell and edged out the Panthers by a 2-1 score at the Indian River Complex. Senior Joe Morse scored Morgan’s first goal on an assist from Gutierrez. Miranda netted the second goal for the Huskies on an assist by senior Nick Boudreau. Totten played goal and made 6 saves for Morgan.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Morgan girls’ volleyball team had three matches on its schedule last week. The Huskies took three defeats to put their overall record at 1-3 on the season.
In its first match of the week, Morgan took a 3-2 road loss versus North Branford on Sept. 12. Two days later, the Huskies are on the road to face Valley Regional and lost the contest by a 3-1 score. Then on Sept. 16, Morgan hosted East Hampton and took a 3-1 defeat to the Bellringers.
Field Hockey
The Morgan field hockey team hit the road to play three away games during the past week of action. The Huskies two losses to start the week, but finished things off by defeating Norwich Free Academy to pick up their first win of the year and improve to 1-3.
On Sept. 12, Morgan traveled to Deep River to face Valley Regional and took a 1-0 defeat. Then on Sept. 15, the Huskies played a road game versus Haddam-Killingworth and dropped a 3-0 decision the Cougars.
Two days later, Morgan was back on the road to face Norwich Free Academy and claimed a 2-1 victory in the game. Senior Brooke Carlisle scored a goal and also converted a penalty stroke to account for Morgan’s two scores. Head Coach Ally Holmes said that senior captain Shannon O’Brien played amazing defense in the midfield and also helped keep the ball up the field for most of the game to support the Huskies’ offense.
