East Haven Football Takes 30-20 Defeat Versus E.O. Smith; Volleyball Loses Contests to Lauralton Hall and North Haven

The East Haven football team traveled to Storrs to take on E.O. Smith for its second contest of the 2022 season. East Haven took a 30-20 defeat versus the Panthers in a non-conference game at E.O. Smith High School and is now on 0-2 on the year.
East Haven and E.O. Smith were locked in a 6-6 tie after the first quarter of last week’s matchup. The Panthers outscored the Yellowjackets 12-8 in the second quarter to take an 18-14 lead into halftime, and that was the way the score stayed entering the fourth quarter. E.O. Smith went on to outscore East Haven 12-6 during the final frame to come away with the 30-20 victory.
Senior quarterback Dom Salato completed 9 passes for 103 yards with a touchdown for East Haven in last week’s game. Sophomore Nick Bilides ran the ball 14 times for 91 yards, sophomore Alex Dombrowski had 7 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore Rocco D’Amato had 7 rushes for 23 yards and a TD.
D’Amato also caught 2 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown for the Yellowjackets. Bilides had 2 receptions for 33 yards and also ran in a 2-point conversion in the game.
Senior Giovanni Caputo blocked a field goal for East Haven against E.O. Smith. Sophomore Chase Horton forced a fumble in the contest.
Salato, sophomore Dante Rodriguez, and sophomore Joe Allen made 7 tackles apiece on defense for the Easties. Senior Jason Toth recorded 5 tackles on the night for Head Coach Scott Benoit’s squad.
East Haven returns home to host Bethel for another non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 23. Bethel comes into the contest with a record of 0-2 on the year. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. under the lights at East Haven High School.
Girls’ Volleyball
The East Haven girls’ volleyball squad played a pair of road matches in last week’s action. East Haven took a loss to Lauralton Hall and then lost a contest against North Haven to move to 0-3 this season.
In their first match of the week, the Yellowjackets lost a 3-0 decision at Lauralton Hall on Sept. 14. The Crusaders swept the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-14. Senior Autumn Clancy had 7 digs with 5 aces for East Haven in the matchup. Sophomore Alexa Heaphy posted 4 kills to go with 5 aces for Head Coach Craig Brown’s team.
On Sept. 16, the Yellowjackets played a road match versus North Haven and took a 3-0 defeat. The Nighthawks took the match by the final tally of 25-8, 25-22, 25-9. Freshman Kelsey Hinckley had 3 blocks with 1 kills for East Haven. Fellow freshman Eva Backhaus contributed 3 aces and 1 dig in the match.
East Haven is playing an away match against Career at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Sept. 23. After that, the Yellowjackets have a home match versus Hamden on Monday, Sept. 26 at 5:15 p.m., followed by a road match with Hillhouse on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The East Haven girls’ soccer team had road games against Hand and Guilford on last week’s schedule. The Yellowjackets took two defeats to put their record at 0-4 on the year.
On Sept. 13, East Haven traveled to Madison to play Hand and took an 8-0 defeat at the Surf Club. Then on Sept. 16, the Yellowjackets were back on the road for a matchup versus Guilford and lost to the Grizzlies by an 8-2 score.
East Haven is hosting Sheehan for a home game on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m. The Easties will then play at Lauralton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. After that, the Yellowjackets are hosting Career-Hillhouse at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The East Haven-Wilbur Cross-Hillhouse (EH-C-H) girls’ swimming and diving team began its season by competing in two meets last week. The Yellowjackets took a defeat to North Haven and then lost to Amity for an early record of 0-2 on the season.
EH-C-H took a 77-53 home loss to North Haven at Wilbur Cross High School on Sept. 13. Three days later, EH-C-H was on the road to face Amity and lost to the Spartans by the score of 89-45 at the High Plains Community Center.
Senior Julia Rosado took first place in the 100 backstroke for the Yellowjackets versus Amity, timing in with a mark of 1:04.06. Freshman Diana Melnyk won the
100 breaststroke with a time of 1:52.07, and fellow freshman Madeline Bourdeau claimed first place in the 500 freestyle by finishing in 6:33.36. The Yellowjackets’ 200 freestyle relay of Rosado, senior Abby Brooks, Melnyk, and Bourdeau took first place with a time of 2:00.51.
