The Branford field hockey team had contests against Lauralton Hall and Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) on last week’s schedule. The Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season after earning a win versus Lauralton Hall and then defeating SHA in recent action.
On Sept. 12, Branford hosted Lauralton Hall and claimed a 6-1 win against the Crusaders. Senior Scout Engstrom scored 2 goals to go with 2 assists for Branford in the victory. Freshman Aliza Giordano scored 2 goals, senior Lauren Kendrick had a goal and an assist, and senior Gianna Bonanno also scored a goal for the Hornets.
Junior Julia Bozzi made 2 saves in goal for Branford, and senior Jade Bocciarelli had 1 save in the game. Head Coach Pete Frye said that his team also received standout performances from senior Aryana Wilson, senior Gianna Bozzi, junior Mia d’Amuri, junior Ellie Wieland, junior Reanna Sachs, sophomore Eliza Burgess, and freshman Tate Jones in the win.
Then on Sept. 16, the Hornets were on the road to face Sacred Heart Academy and won the game by the final score of 3-0. Kendrick netted 2 goals in the victory, while d’Amuri had a goal and an assist for Branford. Gianna Bozzi also chipped in with an assist.
Julia Bozzi made 2 saves in net for the Hornets. Coach Frye said that Wieland, Engstrom, and senior Lauren McCarthy also turned in excellent performances in the win.
Branford is on the road to face Hand for its lone game of the week on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The contest gets underway at 7 p.m. at Daniel Hand High School.
Girls’ Soccer
The Branford girls’ soccer team hosted two games against SCC opponents last week. The Hornets came away with split of the set by taking a loss to Foran and then defeating West Haven for a record of 2-1 this year.
Branford hosted Foran on Sept. 13 and took a 3-1 defeat against the Lions. Senior Ava Ferrie scored the goal for the Hornets by converting a penalty kick.
Three days later, the Hornets played a home game versus West Haven and posted a 5-0 shutout over the Blue Devils. Junior Tess Ferrie was involved in all 5 of Branford’s scores by netting 3 goals to go with 2 assists in the victory. Junior Lucy Moran had a goal with an assist, while junior Brenna Murphy also scored a goal for the Hornets. Senior Samantha Stroka and sophomore Bryce Infantino each had an assist. Senior Molly Pombo made 4 saves for the shutout in net.
The Hornets are hosting Cheshire on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. After that, Branford has a home game with Hamden at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, followed by an away game versus Amity on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 3:45 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The Branford boys’ soccer team was on the road to play a pair of matchups in recent action. The Hornets earned a victory against Lyman Hall and then lost Fairfield Prep to put their record at 2-1 on the year.
Branford kicked off its week by posting a 5-1 road victory over Lyman Hall on Sept. 12. Then on Sept. 17, the Hornets took a 7-0 defeat versus Fairfield Prep in a road game at Fairfield University.
Branford’s next game is at Amistad on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 3:45 p.m. The Hornets return home to face North Haven on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. and will then play a home game against Shelton on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
Football
The Branford football team hosted Guilford for an SCC Tier 3 matchup on Sept. 16. The Hornets took a 28-7 defeat to the Grizzlies at Branford High School to put their overall record at 1-1 on the season with a mark of 0-1 in the division.
The Hornets are hosting non-conference opponent Tolland for their next game on Friday, Sept. 23. Tolland comes into the game with a record of 2-0. The contest is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at Branford High School.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Branford girls’ volleyball squad took three defeats between its three matches last week and now has a record of 1-3 this season. The Hornets lost contests against North Haven, Amity, and Wilton in last week’s matchups.
On Sept. 12, Branford hosted North Haven and took a 3-0 loss to the Nighthawks. Two days later, the Hornets traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity dropped a 3-0 decision to the Spartans. Then on Sept. 17, Branford was back on the road for a non-conference match versus Wilton and lost the match by a 3-0 score.
The Hornets will be on the road to face Foran at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. Branford’s next match is at home versus Guilford on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team recently began its first season with new Head Coach Sally Noel. The Hornets opened their campaign with meets against Lyman Hall and Amity, and Cheshire and took defeats in each of the contests.
Branford took a 92-58 home loss to Lyman Hall in its season opener at Walsh Intermediate School on Sept. 10. Three days later, the Hornets hosted Amity and lost the matchup by the score of 100-51.
Branford has two road meets this week. The Hornets are facing North Haven on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Branford will then compete againts the East Haven-Cross-Hillhouse co-op squad at Wilbur Cross High School on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 3:45 p.m.
