Several Grizzlies Teams Begin Seasons With Victories

Girls’ Volleyball

The Guilford girls’ volleyball team opened up the 2022 season on a positive note by shutting out Lyman Hall in its first match of the year last week. The Grizzlies claimed a 3-0 road win over Lyman Hall in their season opener on Sept. 8 for an early record of 1-0.

Senior Halle Krause had 6 kills with 5 assists for Guilford in its win versus Lyman Hall. Senior Emily Lin posted 7 digs, and sophomore Emma Getrost dealt out 4 aces for the Grizzlies.

Marisa Ceneri is back for her second season as head coach of the Guilford volleyball team. Last year, the Grizzlies recorded an overall mark of 11-10 on their way to making both the SCC Tournament and the Class L State Tournament.

Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team hosted Stonington for its first game of the 2022 campaign on Sept. 10. The Grizzlies posted a 5-0 shutout against Stonington at Guilford High School to start off the season with an 1-0 record.

Senior Grace Barlage scored 2 goals for Guilford in its season-opening win over Stonington. Senior Ella Clarke, senior MJ Santa Barbara, and senior Kim Evans added 1 goal apiece. Senior Scout Climie had 2 assists for the Grizzlies, and fellow senior Gigi Meneo handed out 1 assist. Sophomore Eliza Chamberlain made 3 saves in goal.

Guilford claimed its fourth-straight SCC title and then won its third-straight Class M state title last year. Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s squad finished the season with an overall record of 22-1.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country team started up its season by sweeping a quad-meet at East Rock Park on Sept. 8. The Grizzlies totaled a team score of 43 points to earn victories versus Mercy (46), Wilbur Cross (51), and Shelton (87) for a 3-0 start to the season.

Freshman Ciara Davenport finished in second place for Guilford by recording a time of 20:31 at the meet. Senior Alexa Suchy finished in fourth place (21:11), while fellow senior Olivia Kaisin claimed sixth place (22:08) for the Grizzlies in the sweep.

Jim Ford returns for another season as Guilford’s head coach. Last year, the Grizzlies claimed their fifth-straight SCC title and then claimed the Class MM state championship.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Guilford boys’ cross country team participated in a quad-meet at East Rock Park to open its season last week. The Grizzlies defeated two of their three opponents by posting a team score of 60 to earn wins versus Shelton (83) and Wilbur Cross (102) to go with a loss against Xavier (15) on Sept. 8. Guilford is off to a 2-1 start of the year.

Junior Michael Masotti finished in 10th place for the Grizzlies at last week’s meet. Masotti timed in with a mark of 18:02 on his way to placing 10th in the race.

Guilford finished in first place at the SCC Hammonasset Division Championship last year. The Grizzlies went on to take third place at the SCC Championship and then finished in fourth place for the Class L State Championship.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team recorded a home win versus Lyman Hall in its first meet of the season last week. On Sept. 8, the Grizzlies hosted Lyman Hall at the Walsh Intermediate School and notched a 92-89 victory in the contest.

Jenn Amasino returns for another season as the head coach of the Guilford swim squad. the Grizzlies finished in fifth place at the SCC Championship and then came in third place at the Class M State Championship last year.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer squad began the 2022 fall season by playing a road game against Hand weekend. On Sept. 10, the Grizzlies took on Hand at the Surf Club and played the Tigers to a 2-2 draw in the contest.

Guilford posted an overall record of 9-7-3 while qualifying for SCCs and states last season. Head Coach Regina Sullivan’s club ultimately advanced to the second round of the Class L State Tournament.

Football

The Guilford football team kicked off a new season by hosting Fitch for a battle at Kavanaugh Field on Sept. 9. The Grizzlies took a 22-14 defeat to the Falcons in the non-conference clash to open the year with a record of 0-1.

Guilford is playing a road game versus fellow SCC Tier 3 opponent Branford on Friday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Branford High School.
