The Morgan girls’ soccer team played a pair of home games during the first week of the 2022 season. The Huskies lost a contest to Waterford before earning a win versus Westbrook to begin the year with a record of 1-1.
Morgan hosted Waterford for its season opener on Sept. 8 and took a 2-1 defeat in the game. Senior Emily Smith scored Morgan’s lone goal of the contest. Junior goalie Samantha Way made 8 saves in net.
The following day, the Huskies played a home game against Westbrook and triumphed by the final score of 9-0 at the Indian River Complex. Junior Maeve Madura scored 3 goals for the Huskies in the win. Junior Anastasia Luke had 2 goals with 2 assists, scoring the first varsity goal of her career.
Sophomore Melanie Pugo and freshman Sadie Passante also scored the first varsity goals of their careers for Morgan. Junior Glenda Zhiminaicela added a goal in the victory. Junior Katerine Toledo netted a goal on a penalty kick. The Huskies also received assists from Smith, senior Caeley Ayer, senior Eve Gardner, sophomore Olivia Ruotolo, and freshman Addie Reed.
Sophomore Liliana Novicki and junior Maddie Sacta each played one half in goal for Morgan. Sacta made 1 save during the second half.
Morgan is coming off of a campaign in which the Huskies put together an undefeated regular season and then claimed the Shoreline Conference title with a 2-1 overtime victory versus Portland. Head Coach Steve Sullivan’s club ultimately finished the year with an overall record of 12-1-7 after reaching the second round of the Class M State Tournament.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Morgan girls’ volleyball squad opened its season on a triumphant note last week. The Huskies posted a 3-0 home win over Old Lyme in their first match on Sept. 18 to start off the year with a 1-0 record.
Jessica Lynch is back for another year as the head coach of the Huskies’ volleyball team. Morgan finished with a mark of 7-13 in the 2021 campaign.
Field Hockey
The Morgan field hockey team played a road game against Old Saybrook in its season opener on Sept. 8. Morgan dropped a 4-1 decision to the Rams at Old Saybrook High School for an 0-1 start to the year.
Senior Sophia Vigorito scored Morgan’s goal in its game against Old Saybrook. Fellow senior Lola Damiano had the assist for the Huskies.
The Huskies posted an overall record of 5-9-2 during the 2021 season. Morgan’s head coach is Ally Holmes.
Football
The Morgan football team hit the road to face Cromwell-Portland for its season opener last week. The Huskies took a 41-0 loss to the Panthers at Pierson Park in Cromwell on Sept. 8.
Kevin Sullivan returns for his second season as Morgan’s head coach. The Huskies had a big year that saw the team finish with an overall record of 8-3 while qualifying for the Class S State Playoffs for the first time since 2015.
Morgan is hosting Haddam-Killlingworth for its next game on Friday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Peters Complex.
