White Sox Overtake First Place in Deep River Horseshoe League

There was a big shakeup at the top of the standings as the Deep River Horseshoe League entered the final third of its regular season last week. The White Sox took over first place in the standings after notching a 5.5-0.5 victory over the Pirates during Week 12 action at the First Congregational Church in Deep River on July 14.

Westbrook resident Dennis Allen recorded a series of 107 to help the White Sox defeat the Pirates and move into first place last week. Allen posted the top score in the B Division for the week and has finished in the top three in the division in four of the past five weeks. As a team, the White Sox had put together a record of 21.5-8.5 throughout the past several weeks and are now in first place by two games in the league standings.

In a matchup that featured the league’s two leading scorers, the Giants claimed a 5-1 win versus the Marlins to move into a tie for third place with the Marlins and the Pirates. Haddam resident Mike Zanelli, Sr., of the Giants tossed a series of 168, tying the top mark for best series in the league this year and putting him in first place for the A Division on the week. Zanelli, Sr., finished the night with 3 perfect games and had just 1 open box to lead the Giants to the victory. Clinton resident Mark Goodale of the Marlins, who recorded that league-high 168 series two weeks ago, finished this week with a score of 134, putting him in a tie for second place among A Division throwers.

The Orioles moved into second place after notching a 5-1 win against the Cubs. The Orioles have been sneaking up the standings throughout the season by eking out some victories.

In a rare feat, the Reds saw all three of their throwers finish in the top three of their respective divisions on the week during the team’s 4-2 win over the Yankees. Pudge Goodrich of Old Lyme posted a season-best series of 134 to finish in a tie for second place in the A Division. Jeremy Davis of Chester led the B Division with a score of 106, and Bob Beckwith of Guilford tallied a season-best total of 87 points to top the list in the C Division. The Reds also scored 300 points as a team for the second week in a row.

Zanelli, Sr, led the pack in the A Division for Week 12 with his score of 168. Goodale and Goodrich finished in a tie for second place with their totals of 134. Allen finished first in the B Division with a series of 107 on the week. Davis was next in line with a 106, and Cody Layton of Deep River tossed a 104 to take third place. Beckwith’s score of 87 was the best in the C Division for the week. Norwich resident Keith Fontaine scored a 78 to finish second, and Paul Stevens of Higganum came in third place with a score of 74.

The Orioles are in second at 41.5-30.5, while the Pirates, Giants, and Marlins are all locked in a tie for third place with their records of 40.5-31.5.
