07/22/2022 12:34 PMThe Marlins moved within a game of first place in the Deep River Horseshoe League standings after posting a 6-0 sweep over the Angels during Week 11 play. The Marlins were without the league’s leading scorer, Mark Goodale of Clinton, but saw Old Saybrook resident Frank Jolly step into the lineup and help the team come away with a sweep at the First Congregational Church in Deep River on July 7.
The Marlins were able to pick up a couple of games on the Pirates, who claimed a 4-2 win versus the Padres in Week 11. Higganum resident Paul Stevens of the Pirates was the league’s leading scorer for the C Division on the week with a 100 series.
Westbrook resident Dennis Allen of the White Sox recorded a 115 series to finish at the second-leading scorer in the B Division. Allen topped the century mark for the fourth week in a row to help the White Sox notch a 5-1 victory over the Yankees to gain sole possession of third place.
Westbrook resident Kris Toohey of the Cardinals put together one of the most impressive performances of the week. Toohey led all scorers with 159 points, 44 ringers, and 10 doubles during Week 11, finishing with 3 perfect games, 3 games of more than 40 points, and only 1 open box.
Toohey’s performance led the Cardinals to a 4-2 win against the Giants. The Cardinals are 17-7 over the past four week and have jumped up from 13th place into a tie for fifth place. Haddam resident Mike Zanelli, Sr., of the Giants posted the third-best score in the A Division on the week by tossing a 134 in the loss.
The Dodgers earned a 3.5-2.5 victory versus the Royals last week. Hamden resident Butch Carotenuto of the Dodgers finished with a 123 for the best score in the B Division. East Hartford resident Deb Scully of the Royals finished with a series of 75 for the third-best score among the C Division pitchers.
Toohey’s total of 159 led the way in the A Division last week, followed by Bill Beckwith of Old Lyme (135) and Zanelli, Sr. (134). Carotenuto was the top placer for the B Division with a score of 123, while Jeremy Davis of Chester and Allen finished in a tie for second with their scores of 115. Paul Stevens of Higganum led the pack in the C Division with a series of 100 and was followed by Scully (75) and Guilford resident Bob Beckwith (71).
The Pirates remain in first place by the slimmest of margins with their record of 40-26. The Marlins are nipping at the Pirates’ heels in second place with a mark of 39.5-26.5. The White Sox are in third place at 38-28, the Orioles are holding down fourth place with a record of 36.5-29.5, and the Royals and Cardinals are tied for fifth as both clubs hold a record of 36-30.
