Essex Police Incident Report for May 9 to 11


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Wednesday, May 9 - Thursday, May 10

• No arrests were made and no incidents were reported.

Friday, May 11

• No arrests were made.

• A 16 year-old girl of Chord Lane in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 7:21 a.m. for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart after the 2008 Ford Focus she was operating eastbound on Main Street struck the rear of a 1997 Subaru Outback operated by a 16 year-old girl of Rosewood Lane in Ivoryton. A 17 year-old girl of Town Wood Road was a passenger onboard the Subaru. The 16 year-old operator of the Subaru complained of general soreness but declined medical attention. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

• At 12:18 p.m. A 72 year-old Chester man was operating a 1990 Jeep Wrangler while towing a small landscape trailer when he stopped on Plains Road northbound at the Valley Railroad crossing just passed the “stop line.” The railroad gate slowed just behind the vehicle and the operator moved forward because he thought the gate was going to strike his vehicle. The trailer caught the gate and broke it. The operator advised railroad employees of the accident who in turn called police. A 48 year-old woman was a passenger onboard the Jeep. No injuries were reported at the scene and no enforcement action was indicated.

• A 46 year-old man of Woodland Road was issued a citation at 6:17 p.m. for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart after the 1996 Mercedes C22 he was operating struck the rear of a 2001 Lexus ES3000 operated by a 63 year-old Higganum man who had slowed on Route 153 westbound to make a right turn into a driveway. A 61 year-old man of the same Higganum address was a passenger onboard the Lexus. No injuries were reported at the scene.
