Salvatore DeCristoforo

Salvatore “Sal” F. DeCristoforo, a lifelong resident of Westbrook, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 26, 2024, at the age of 86. Born Nov. 21, 1937, he was the eldest son of Francis and Catherine (LaCastro) DeCristoforo.

A 1955 graduate of Old Saybrook High School, Sal excelled in basketball, soccer, and baseball. He was the first recipient of the Athlete of the Year Award. He attended the University of Bridgeport on a full athletic scholarship. In 1956, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving for two years. Upon the retirement of his parents in the mid-60s, he continued operating Cristy’s Restaurant, which his father founded in 1957, until its sale and Sal’s retirement in 2006.

He was an avid sports fan, especially the New York Yankees. Sports photos and memorabilia adorned Cristy’s. He loved the theater, attending many Broadway shows with friends and family. Some of his most enjoyable hours were spent hosting dinner parties at his home and Cristy’s. While smoking a cigar, with a glass of Dewars or Chianti in hand, he would share countless stories of his favorite Yankees and Knicks games, Broadway shows, trips to Italy, and his early years working at Bill Hahn’s Hotel. His favorite restaurant of over 50 years was Forlini’s in NYC’s Little Italy where he enjoyed taking many friends and family over the years.

He is survived by his brothers, James (Karen) DeCristoforo of Warren, Oregon, and John (Deborah) DeCristoforo of Old Saybrook; a nephew, Dan DeCristoforo of Old Saybrook; three nieces, Kristine Nowak, Katherine Frare and Noelle Sisk all of Portland, Oregon; as well as six grandnieces and nephews.

Per Sal’s request, there are no services. Donations can be made to the Shriners Hospital or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
