Katherine Homer

Katherine Louise (Marshall) Homer, age 102, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2024, in the arms of her loving granddaughter. Surrounded by her adoring family in the weeks leading up to her death, Katherine lived a strong and independent life.

Katherine “Kay” was born the eldest of two children on May 24, 1922, to Dora (Griffin) Marshall and Edgar Marshall in Everett, Massachusetts. She married Edwin Wilson Homer in 1943 and shared 61 years of marriage. While raising her two sons, Kay attended Salem State College and graduated with a degree in education. Soon thereafter, she moved to the Guilford-Madison area and taught in the Guilford Public Schools for 20 years. Upon retirement, Kay and Ed settled in Naples, Florida, and took every opportunity to travel around the world. In 2018, Kay returned to Madison to live closer to her family. Throughout much of her life, Kay spent summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and passed down a deep love of this special place to future generations.

Kay found tremendous joy in life’s simplest pleasures. She cherished a good book on the beach, swimming laps in the ocean, and savoring coffee and conversation at her local coffee shops. She loved a relaxed round of golf, skiing Mt. Ascutney with her family, and tuning into a Boston Red Sox game. Her family was her world; her eyes sparkled at the sight of her great-grandchildren through her very last days.

Kay was predeceased by her husband Edwin, her brother Kenneth Marshall, and her grandson Brian Homer. She is survived by two sons, Donald Homer (Annis) of Guilford and David Homer (Jayne) of Madison; three granddaughters, Amy Haefner (John) of Trumansburg, New York, Laura Ryan (Timothy) of East Haddam, and Jamie Bruce (Benjamin) of Guilford; and nine great-grandchildren: Tim, Matthew, Ben, Libby, Kate, Kaelyn, Avery, Marshall and Elleia.

Her family will honor her life with a private memorial service at the North Guilford Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Kay’s memory to E.C. Scranton Memorial Library at 801 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443 or www.scrantonlibrary.org or to the Closer to Free Fund for Smilow Cancer Hospital at www.givetoynhh.org.

Arrangements are in care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. To share a memory or leave condolences, visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
