Milton Campbell Jr.

Milton Clyde Campbell Jr. passed away suddenly Aug. 16, 2024, at his home in Madison. He was born March 24, 1938, to Maxine Brawley and Milton Clyde Campbell in Newton, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, “Buck” Campbell (Meshaan) and Reid Campbell (Sue); daughter Courtney Muller (Roger); grandchildren: Ashley Birnbaum (John), Christopher Campbell (Amy), Caroline Muller, Morgan Campbell and Michael Campbell (Kendall); and great-grandsons, John and Grant Birnbaum.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. While at UNC, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Order of Gimghoul. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he honorably served as an officer, attaining the rank of Captain. After the Marine Corps, he embarked on what would become a 26-year career with IBM, where he held various sales and corporate positions throughout the country. His last assignment in the northeast brought him and his family to New Canaan, where he could be seen jogging daily throughout town. He was always there for his children, enjoying their friends and activities and instilling in them the virtues of honesty, integrity, and hard work.

In later years, Clyde moved to Madison, where he enjoyed sunrises at the wharf, walks with his dogs and friends, crossword puzzles, UNC sports and meticulously maintaining his property. His last few years were spent at home with his sweet dog Lucy and with the help of his beloved caregiver, Dianne Greene. With his wry sense of humor and Southern charm, he had an easy, friendly interest in everyone. Clyde’s great love and pride were in his family, all of his golden retrievers, his country, and the Marine Corps … Semper Fi.

A celebration of life will be held from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Madison Beach Hotel. Donations in his memory can be made to the ASCPA or the Wounded Warrior Project.
