Andrea Schieckel Clark

Beloved wife, mother, and teacher Andrea Schieckel Clark passed away from ALS on Aug. 15, 2024. She bore her illness with grace, never losing her wry sense of humor.

Born in Husum, Germany, in June of 1945, she moved to Wisconsin with her parents, Christoph and Doris Martin Schieckel, in 1949. She is a graduate of Carleton College, with Masters degrees from Yale and Columbia. Andrea taught English at Lee and Hillhouse High Schools in New Haven and, for the last 20 years before retirement, at the Walsh Intermediate School in Branford. In retirement, she volunteered countless hours teaching ESL at Integrated Refugee & Immigration Services (IRIS) and coordinated the Children’s section of the Blackstone Library Friends annual book sale. She was an avid and skilled gardener and enjoyed many trips abroad.

Andrea is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jon; children, Michael (Marjorie), Jennifer (Tom), and Christopher (Diana); her grandchildren, Isabel, Nathan, and Corinne; and siblings, Martin and Trixi.

The family is grateful to the caring folks at Lifetime Care at Home, especially her long-time caregiver Joan, to CT Hospice, and for the support of ALS United CT and the Gleason Foundation. Memorial contributions may be made to IRIS, 235 Nicoll St., New Haven, CT 06511 (irisct.org) or to ALS United CT at 4 Oxford Rd, Milford, CT 06460 (alsunitedct.org).

A celebration of Andrea’s life will be held at a future date.
