Sylvia K. Wakefield

Sylvia K. Wakefield, of Northport, Florida, and North Haven, passed away peacefully in her Florida home on Aug. 17, 2024, surrounded by family. Born in New Haven on March 25, 1932, to parents, the late Edward Kohn and Freda Kohn Hendel, Sylvia was the wife for almost 70 years of the late William “Bill” Wakefield; mother of Lynn Wakefield-Testa, David Wakefield (Ann) and the late Marty Wakefield. She was very proud of her children, her grandchildren, Mark (Jenn), Kim (Josh), Chris (Emily), Laura (Lindsay), and Jonathan; and her seven great-grandchildren.

She will be missed for her quick wit, brilliance, her creative energy, for always working to do the right thing, and her fearlessness to confront challenging situations.

Sylvia was a graduate of Quinnipiac University in business administration and regional manager for Coppercraft Guild. She built her successful sales business as the owner of Wakefield Interiors until her retirement. She was a social butterfly with her UI engineering and UConn basketball-loving couples friends, her membership with the Red Hat Society, her bible study sessions, workout classes, and Mahjong games. Above all, she loved painting. Her paintings have graced her family and friends’ walls throughout her lifetime. Sylvia volunteered by teaching oil painting to elderly dementia patients at the Masonic home and for the caregivers of congregants of the Lutheran Church of Living Waters in North Port, Florida. Sylvia will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The visiting hours were on Aug. 22 at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A funeral service followed at Christ the Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 600 Shepard Avenue, Hamden. Interment was at Center Cemetery, Elm Street, North Haven. Sylvia and Bill had six rescue dogs over their lifetime together and would appreciate donations to Dog Days Adoption Events at www.GoDogDays.org in lieu of flowers. www.northhavenfuneral.com
