Cynthia Small Dwyer


Cynthia Small Dwyer, 84, a lifelong resident of Guilford, passed away Aug. 7, 2024, in her home of 63 years, surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 7, 1940, in Staten Island, New York. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, James P. Dwyer, Jr.; her parents, Lucy Spencer Small Baxter and Raymond W. Small; adopted father, Hartwell A. Baxter; and a brother, Stephen Small. She was the loving mother of Anna J. Dwyer, Matthew W. Dwyer, Ruth M. Dwyer, John R. Dwyer (Kelly), and Sarah D. Nemec (Thomas); and seven adored grandchildren, Kyle Dwyer, Mary Dwyer, Catherine Beames, Cassandra Nemec, Julia Nemec, Stephen Nemec, and Rachael Taylor (Cody). Also survived by a brother, Donald R. Small of Portland, Oregon; her sister, Marilou Spencer of Guilford; her brother, George Baxter of Parma, Ohio; and several cherished cousins and many devoted friends. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Robert.

Cynthia was a 1958 graduate of Guilford High School. She served as probate clerk in Guilford for over 29 years and will be long remembered for the compassion, kindness, and generosity she showed to everyone she met. She was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church, and over the years, she had served as a member of the choir, the alter guild, and the vestry.

Cynthia’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to her caregiver, Nellie, who helped to make her last days so comfortable, and to the staff at Masonicare in Wallingford, who also cared for her.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park St., Guilford. A private burial will be held at Alder Brook Cemetery, Guilford. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Dwyer’s memory may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 11 Park St., Guilford, CT 06437, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
