Nancy Childs

Nancy Elizabeth Miller Childs of Branford passed away on July 16, 2024, at the Hospital of St. Raphael. She was the wife of her high school sweetheart, the late Wayne G. Childs, for 59 years. She was the mother of David Childs of Quincy, Massachusetts, Paul Childs (Jan) of North Haven, and Stephen Childs (Renie) of Branford. She was the grandmother of Scott Childs (Lauren), Gregory Childs (Sylvia), Danielle Childs-Cook (Joseph), and Dalton Childs (Sara Ivey); eight great-grandchildren; a loving niece; and two nephews.

Nancy was born in New Haven on Aug. 13, 1939, the daughter of Harold and Rhoda Miller. Nancy grew up in North Haven and was a graduate of North Haven High, Class of ‘57, University of Connecticut, ‘61. After graduation, Nancy and Wayne were wed on April 20, 1963, and soon moved to Branford to raise a family.

Nancy started her career at the FBI, then took a break to start a family. She then went on to work as an administrative assistant at Branford High School and Yale University for many years.

Nancy loved her long-time friends and neighbors in Hotchkiss Grove, where she and Wayne had summered as teenagers and had called home since 1963. She would welcome anyone into their home. The tight-knit group of neighbors, including her dear sister-in-law Lois Childs, had annual seafood cookouts where she would make her amazing stuffed clams and clam chowder, day trips to Misquamicut with a multitude of children, and weekly Friday night pizza on the beach. The group of friends would hang out on the beach from dawn till dusk and go away on boat trips to Long Island, Essex, and Block Island, to name a few. They also spent time traveling to Maine, Florida, the Grand Canyon, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and the Canadian Rockies together.

Although she loved her friends, her family came first. Nancy spent countless hours sweating at swimming pools and freezing in ice rinks with her sons. Traveling to places all over New England just to watch the grand and great-grandchildren at dance recitals, basketball games, and another generation of hockey games. She was extremely proud of all the children, to say the least. She was in many organizations, including the First Congregational Church of Branford, the Branford Garden Club, the Homemaker’s Thrift Shop, Former Women of the FBI, and she was a previous board member of the Hotchkiss Grove Association.

The family asks that expressions of sympathy be made in her memory to any of the following: Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, Homemaker’s Thrift Shop, or Yale Cancer Center

A memorial service was held on July 25 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street. Friends called prior to the service. Please see her online memorial @ www.wsclancy.com.
