Calvin Haseltine

Calvin Davis Haseltine, age 98, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024, at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, with his son Bill right by his side. He was born on Sept. 11, 1925, in Boston. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lois Gadue Haseltine; father, Emery Haseltine; mother, Hester Haseltine; brother, Robert Haseltine; and two daughters, Tacy (Pete) Neri and Priscilla (Lew) Petit. Calvin is survived by his loving children, Betsy Haseltine of Charlotte, North Carolina; Davis (Peg) Haseltine of Plymouth, Massachusetts; and Bill (Mona) Haseltine of North Haven. He is survived by his sister, Harriet Cramton, and his family: eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and additional family members.

Calvin lived in Boston for his childhood, never losing his accent. He (unwillingly) attended Boston Latin School, and at age 18, he joined the Merchant Marines for the last two years of World War II. He loved the ocean and had many stories to tell over the years about that adventure. Soon after the war, he married his beloved wife, Lois, of 72 years, residing in North Haven for 40 years. With five children and a full-time job, he attended Southern Connecticut State College for four years, eventually earning a master’s degree, and taught Biology for many years at Hamden High School.

From an early age, Calvin was always interested in all animals and nature. He realized his dream of owning land in his beloved state of Vermont. He developed his master carpenter skills every summer, building the “Camp” — a rustic cabin, four barns, a greenhouse with root cellar, and a sugar house where he made maple syrup for many years. He often brought the Biology Club he created for his students to his Vermont property of 300 acres. Upon retirement, Calvin moved to Barre, Vermont, and spent much time on his land in Danville. Calvin dearly loved his family and friends, his gardens, white water canoeing, three weeks in Newfoundland, Canada, for many summers, and through it all, he loved his devoted canine companions, his many dogs over the years, and he had a fondness for snakes.

The visiting hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, at The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A private Celebration of Life ceremony and Interment will be held at the Vermont family camp at a later date this summer. A special note of thanks and appreciation to The Landing of North Haven staff and administration for the love, compassion, and assistance they shared with Calvin every day. www.northhavenfuneral.com.
