Robert L. Glynn Jr.

Robert “Bob” Lawrence Glynn Jr. lived a full and meaningful life surrounded by family, friends, and community. He passed away on March 24, 2024, after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on May 30, 1947, to Elizabeth and Robert Glynn, Bob grew up in Clinton and often described his childhood as idyllic. In Clinton, Bob had the run of the town and spent most of his time at the beach and town dock. He was beloved by all who knew him and touched so many lives.

Bob was a star athlete at The Morgan School who excelled at soccer and basketball. In 1964, his soccer team won the state championship. His soccer career continued at the University of Connecticut where he played on the varsity team. He remained a lifelong Huskies fan. Bob later received a master’s degree in physical education from Virginia Tech University. He continued his passion for physical fitness and sports all his life, teaching physical education at Fairfax Villa Elementary in Fairfax, Virginia, for 36 years. In 2007 the school threw a momentous retirement party for him that included students, parents, school staff, community members and elected officials. The Fairfax County School Board officially named the Fairfax Villa gymnasium in his honor.

Bob and Sharon met in the summer of 1966 and married on March 28, 1970. Shortly after the wedding, the Marine Corps sent them to Arlington, Virginia, and they decided to put down roots in the area and raise their two children. Bob was an incredibly active father who put his family above everything else. He was known for his cooking, and everyone looked forward to his homemade pizza and chocolate chip cookies on Friday nights.

Bob and Sharon were blessed to retire to their lakefront home on Lake Anna. Together, they traveled to South Dakota to work on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and had many overseas adventures. At home on the lake, Bob loved all his water toys. Bob and Sharon always welcomed friends and family, making every trip to LKA magical. “Captain Bob” spent ten glorious years on the water, including countless hours delighting kids with tube rides. Friends and family will always remember the epic Fourth of July celebrations and elaborate Easter egg hunts.

The Glynn home was always full of friends and neighbors. Those who knew Bob count themselves lucky. He was one of the most caring people you could ever meet. Incredibly hard-working, he loved working in the yard, tending to his garden, baking pies and riding his jet skis. He was devoted to his family and adored his children and grandchildren. His favorite role was father and grandfather.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Sharon; his daughter Dana, son-in-law Christopher; son Daniel and daughter-in-law Jennifer; his wonderful grandchildren, Prestley, Tyler, Aidan, Travis, Beau, James and Dylan. He is also survived by his devoted sisters, Kathy and Maureen; his brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

A service and reception was held April 13, 2024, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Dranesville Road, Herndon, Virginia.
