06/06/2024 11:11 AMMary B. “Diffy” Smith, 84, of Madison, passed away on April 30, 2024. Born in Laurelton, New York, on Jan. 12, 1940, she was the daughter of the late John W. Bryan Sr. and Muriel S. Bryan.
Diffy was a graduate of Daniel Hand High School. She got married, raised a family, worked, and volunteered her time for most of her life in Madison. Diffy was a member of the Madison Rotary, the Garden Club, and a past president of the Women’s Club. She was the director of senior services of Madison for many years before retiring in 2004. She loved to read and avidly watched both men’s and women’s UConn basketball games.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, John W. Bryan Jr., Bruce P. Bryan, F. Gerald Bryan and his wife Janet T. Bryan, and James W. Bryan; and sister-in-law Yvonne S. Conley. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Laurel Ann Olcott; and her niece, Melinda Bryan. She is survived by her husband, Freeman R. Smith Jr.; son, Gary F. Smith; daughter, Charol V. Cowan and her husband Jeffery M. Cowan; and son-in-law, David W. Olcott. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christina Cowan, Matthew Cowan, Annalyse Olcott, and Kailina Olcott; her brother, Edwin B. Bryan and his wife Marianne K. Bryan; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy K. Bryan and Julia N. Bryan; and many nieces and nephews.
She will be missed by us all.
