Sarah “Sally” Gray Markesky

Sarah “Sally” Gray Markesky, age 77, of Essex, passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Steve Markesky. A devoted mother and grandmother, Sally is survived by her loving children: Jacquie, Chris, Sarah, Luke, and Kate. Sally loved nothing more than her four beautiful granddaughters: Brogan, Anna, Ellie, and Finley.

Born in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Sally was the daughter of M. Mallory and Josephine Gray. She is survived by her brother, Mike Gray of Auburndale, Massachusetts. Sally was predeceased by her sister, Janet Gray.

Sally graduated from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, in 1964, where she was an active member of the chorus. Sally went on to graduate from the University of Toledo where she studied English.

Sally was a fearless world traveler. As a young adult, she traveled through Europe, learning new cultures and seeking adventures. She eventually landed in Libya, where she lived and taught English for a year. Sally traveled between the UK and the US for a decade until she and her husband, Steve, permanently settled in Essex in 1979, where they raised their children and were active members in the Connecticut Shoreline community. Sally owned her own business as a Title Searcher in residential real estate.

In her spare time, Sally worshipped and sang in the choir at Our Lady of Sorrows in Essex. She enjoyed walks with her neighbors and friends, attending the theatre, spending time on the water, and visiting her children and grandchildren. She had an infectious laugh and lit up any room she entered.

Sally will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford in mid-June.
