Charles R. Young


Charles Richard Young of Madison and Hydra, Greece, died peacefully at age 98 on May 10, 2024. He was born on June 6,1925, to Charles and Mary Young in New Britain, where he attended New Britain High School.

After graduating, he served in the U.S. Marines as a pharmacist’s mate in the South Pacific during World War II and fought in the battles of Okinawa and Guadalcanal. Following his discharge, he attended Central Connecticut State College and later Columbia College in New York. He went on to teach English at East Haven High School in Connecticut. In 1967, he and his family moved to Athens, Greece, where he taught at Athens College.

After the death of his first wife, Marcie Ellen (Leister), he built a villa on the Island of Hydra, Greece. He lived in both Greece and Connecticut with his second wife, Mary (Papageorgiu) who predeceased him in 2023. He was also predeceased by his brother Donald of Punta Gorda, Florida; and his sister Elizabeth Miller, of New Britain. He is survived by his children, Tina, Fay and Charles; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

A lifelong writer, he became a best-selling novelist in Greece.

His was a magnificent life, and he lived it to the fullest. He will be profoundly missed.
