Josh Lipschutz

“Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way” — words of Jimmy Buffett quoted in loving memory of Joshua “Josh” Lipschutz, of Madison, who passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 53, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Throughout his life, Josh exemplified resilience, humor, and a zest for life despite facing significant challenges.

A devoted husband to his beloved wife, Abby, and a cherished father to his two adoring children, Ben (12) and Lilah (11), Josh found his greatest joy in the warmth of his family’s embrace. His love knew no bounds, extending to his parents, Susan and Herb Lipschutz; in-laws, Roberta and Jerry Goldstein; his sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews: Jess (Lipschutz) and Ted Deutsch (Alex and Maddie), Jennifer (Lipschutz)LaPeruta (Sy and Shelby), Stacy and Mark Lettie (Dylan, Sam, and Luke); and special cousins: Carol and Harold Asher, Laura and Matt Lemansky, plus friends near and far, as well as his two dogs, Nola and Ruthie, who were Josh’s constant companions throughout the end of his life’s journey.

Josh found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was sailing the open seas, basking in the warmth of the sun on the beach, enjoying a cold drink in hand, or helping prepare a meal in his lively kitchen of music, kids, and dogs underfoot. Josh’s spirit was easy and was as boundless as the ocean he loved to sail. His eclectic taste in music mirrored his vibrant personality, ranging from the soulful melodies of New Orleans’ jazz and blues to funk, opera, the laid-back rhythms of reggae and country, and the timeless tunes of Broadway.

Josh had a special affinity for the enchanting city of New Orleans, where he found kinship in the vibrant culture and rich tapestry of life, great food and in special family. When given the opportunity, he loved to travel, try new foods and hang amongst the locals, particularly in the islands, or wherever he could wear only flip-flops. Yet, no matter where he roamed, he remained a steadfast friend and confidant, always there to lend an ear or share a laugh.

A skilled athlete from a young age, Josh embraced the thrill of competition and the joy of movement. After graduating from Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren, New Jersey, Josh played tennis for Tulane University in his home away from home, New Orleans. Teammates remembered him as a great leader and friend, as did all of his childhood friends who remained a consistent part of his life. Those who had the privilege of calling Josh their friend will remember him for his infectious laughter, easy-going style, and compassionate heart.

Josh leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship and laughter that will continue to echo in the hearts of all who were privileged to call him friend, family, Dad, and husband.

Josh’s family would like to express their gratitude to the dedicated treatment team at Massachusetts General Hospital and all of the nurses and staff at CT Hospice in Branford.
