03/21/2024 08:38 PMSoren Richard “Whitey” Thomsen of Guilford passed away on Feb. 26, 2024. He was born Oct. 30, 1933, the son of Samuel and Marie Thomsen.
A lifelong resident of Connecticut, he grew up in Hamden. After graduating from Hamden High School, he obtained a B.A. from the School of Communication at Boston University. Returning to Hamden, he began a long, happy, and successful career in advertising with the New Haven Register newspaper, retiring in 1993. In 1964, he married Jeanne Holman Thomsen. They took up residence in Guilford, where they have lived continuously. While raising a family and restoring their antique home, Whitey gave freely and happily of his time to the Guilford Land Trust in its start-up year. He also served on the Board of Assessment Appeals and volunteered with Interfaith Housing and Men Who Cook for the Guilford Women and Family Life Center. All the while enjoying his vegetable garden, golf, and love of travel worldwide.
Whitey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanne, and their two beloved children, son Erik Thomsen and his wife Rebecca Van Dyck and their two daughters, Ella and Katherine; daughter Meghan Dade and her husband Steven and their three children, Benjamin, Madeline, and Miles. Whitey will be remembered by all for his kindness and unshakeable integrity.
This gentle husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend will be missed and will be in our hearts forever. Our memories are a blessing.
A family and friends gathering is planned for early summer to honor Whitey. In his memory, donations may be made to the Guilford Land Trust or your favorite charity.
