Richard H. Moore, Jr.

Richard H. Moore, Jr. (nicknamed “Pete”) died peacefully on Feb. 13, 2024, at the Essex Meadows Health Center. He was born on April 14, 1931, in Plattsburgh, New York, to parents Florence Mae Brown Moore and Richard H. Moore Sr.

As a youth during the Great Depression, Pete’s family traveled throughout the South, pursuing work opportunities before the family found permanent work in New Haven and settled in West Haven. After graduating from West Haven High School, Pete continued his college education at Cornell University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, before furthering his education at New York University School of Business, where he received a Master of Business Administration in banking and finance.

Pete served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. While attending Cornell University, Pete entered the NROTC (Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps), which allowed him to enter naval service as an Ensign. During his service, Pete traveled around the world, stopping in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged from naval service in 1956 after having attained the rank of Lieutenant J.G.

Pete began his banking career by entering the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Management Training Program in 1956. He was promoted to assistant treasurer in 1960, assistant secretary in 1963, and assistant vice president in 1964. During his career, Pete rose to the position of senior vice president with Manufacturers Hanover (now J.P. Morgan Chase) and retained that position until his retirement in 1991.

In retirement, Pete had time for many different interests. Joined by a group of close high school buddies, golf became a weekly hobby. With the advent of the internet, computers captured Pete’s fascination and time. He also volunteered at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Madison, serving as treasurer, as a member of the Vestry and the Endowment Committee, and ushered at Sunday worship services. As an avid reader, Pete read the King James Version of the Holy Bible in its entirety – twice! Pete also found time to keep abreast of happenings in his senior living community by serving on the Essex Meadows Resident’s Council. Pete and Jean enjoyed traveling during their life together, touring Canada, different countries throughout Europe as well as many states in the USA, including Hawaii. However, the Caribbean was one of Pete’s favorite destinations.

Pete leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Jean Thomas Moore; his son, Thomas Dudley Moore; his granddaughter, Rebecca Anne Moore; and his grandson, Ryan Thomas Moore. Pete was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Moore Mohrmann; his brother-in-law, Fred Mohrmann; his niece, Nancy Brown Mohrmann; and his two nephews, Fred R. Mohrmann and Eric Scott Mohrmann. He is survived by his remaining nephew, Jeffrey Douglas Mohrmann, and his spouse, Joanne Ward Mohrmann; his nephews’ surviving spouses, Suzanne Burkhart Mohrmann and Rita Dean Mohrmann, and their extended families in Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, North Carolina, and Georgia. He is likewise survived by members of his wife’s family residing here in Connecticut and Massachusetts: Louise Lundblad; Susan Lundblad Woodson and Thomas Woodson; Sarah Woodson Bernhardson and David Bernhardson and their sons, Nate and Josh; and Sam Woodson and Jackie Gould Woodson and their son, Sawyer; Edward and Sandra Glime Lundblad and their twins, Charlie and Bonnie; Joseph and Mary Staniewicz Pierpont and their seven beautiful children.

Pete was well-loved by family and friends and highly respected by his business associates. He will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. April 20, 2024, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 232 Durham Road, Madison, with a reception immediately following the service at Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Road, Essex.
