Joan (McKiernan) Jarmie, 83, of Branford, passed away on Feb. 23, 2024, at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born Oct. 31, 1940, in New Haven, to John and Margaret (Lawlor) McKiernan. Joan is survived by her loving children, Cheryl Lawlor of Branford and Stephen Jarmie of Warwick, Rhode Island.; along with six grandchildren she adored: Ashton Franks, Samantha Franks, Meghan Franks, Kaitlyn Franks, Matthew Jarmie, and Ryan Jarmie. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph Jarmie (2016), and her four siblings, Patricia McKiernan, Jacqueline Hallisey, Margaret McKiernan, and John McKiernan.
Joan graduated from Hillhouse High School. While raising her two children, she attended and graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She worked in Vital Statistics for the City of New Haven before retiring in 2002. Afterward, she spent her time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joan also volunteered at St. Mary’s Church in the Midnight Run Program, making food for the homeless, and was an advocate for animal shelters, especially cats, where she continued to rescue and care for homeless felines.
Family and friends are invited to meet and attend a Mass of Christian nurial at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, in St. John Bosco Parish at the Church of St. Mary, 731 Main Street, Branford, with Committal to follow at Branford Center Cemetery. All services are under the care of the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven.
