William Hoey Sr.

On Feb. 16, 2024, William “Bill” Hoey, Sr., 66, a longtime resident of Northford, passed away at St. Vincents Hospital in Bridgeport. Bill was born in Hartford on July 16, 1957. He was the amazing husband of Joan (Calabrese) Hoey and the loving father of William Edward Hoey, Jr. of Northford. He is also survived by his brothers, Matthew T. Hoey, III of Guilford, David Hoey of Old Saybrook, Joseph Hoey of Madison, Wisconsin, and Daniel Hoey of Vero Beach, Florida.; Peter Cattaneo of Malvern, Pennsylvania; Matthew Cattaneo of Guilford; John Cattaneo of Washington, D.C.; and Elena Cattaneo of Eureka, California. Predeceased by his father, Matthew Thomas Hoey, Jr.; his mother, Mary Jo (Quigley) Hoey; his stepmother, Priscilla Hoey; and stepbrother, Andrew Cattaneo.

Bill is a graduate of Xavier High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sociology at St. Anselm College. After earning a master’s in Social Work from Fordham University, he finished his education with a master’s in Healthcare Management in Theology from The Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a social worker for the State of Connecticut for several years, moving on to work at The Shirley Frank Foundation, where he met his wife, Joan. After obtaining a master’s in social work from Fordham, he joined the Dioceses of Bridgeport as a vice president, which later became Catholic Charities. He rounded out his career as the chief mission integration officer for the past 12 years at Hartford Healthcare, St. Vincent’s.

Bill was a man of faith, which led him to grow strong ties to the community of Bridgeport. Throughout his time at St. Vincent’s, he was able to play a pivotal role in many efforts, including the House of Hope, Swim Across the Sound, and the Hope Dispensary, while also volunteering in programs such as the Medical Mission at Home. He worked closely with the Bishop and was a well-respected figure in the Dioceses of Bridgeport. Bill always made time for family, spending most Saturdays exploring all around Connecticut with his beloved wife, Joan. He was an avid Boston sports fan and could always be found at Fenway Park watching the Boston Red Sox a couple of times a year. If he wasn’t at Fenway, he would be visiting his son Bill Jr, who resides in the Boston area. Bill was a kind, caring, selfless, and spiritual man whose positive impact will always be remembered, as we are all grateful for the ways he contributed to our lives.

Friends are invited to calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford. Burial will be held privately.
