Mary Mahon

Mary Agnes Mahon, 93, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Feb. 13, 2024, at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Born in New Haven on Jan. 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Michael Joseph Sullivan and Gertrude Sullivan Romano of West Haven and Hamden. Mary leaves behind her beloved husband of 70 years, Walter Mahon.

After graduating from Hamden High School, Mary had a rewarding career, first in the advertising field and later, at Yale University where she thrived among the academics. Being an only child herself, Mary was blessed to be born into the famous Roper clan of West Haven, and as if that wasn’t enough family, she found her way into the Mahon bunch that came with 11 children and loads of in-laws. Mary was very active in the Church of St. Barnabas and the local community, where she served 20 years on the conservation commission, volunteered for the local Democratic Party, taught religious education, and helped organize the annual church Christmas fair. As an accomplished seamstress, Mary was the go-to in the family for alterations and countless Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren; she even handmade wedding gowns for her daughter and daughter-in-law. Mary’s biggest joy was family, friends, and fun — world travel, summers spent camping at Hammonassett Beach, winters on the ski slopes, and margaritas year-round.

She was the mother of Johanna Mahon, Michael (Lynne) Mahon, and Matthew (Heather) Mahon; loving grandmother “Mimi” of Shawn (Kay) Mahon, Cora (Matthew Edwards) Mahon, Lindsay Davis, Wesley (Jennifer Pirrone) Mahon, Courtney Davis, Kaitlin (Paul) Perrotti, and Amanda Mahon.

The visiting hours were on Feb. 19 at The Havens Family, North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Feb. 20 in St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish at St. Barnabas Church, 44 Washington Avenue, North Haven. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to CT Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405. www.northhavenfuneral.com.
