David Findlay
David Findlay, a longtime resident of Guilford, passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven at the age of 92.
David’s parents were Mary Bouton Morris and Robert Tower Findlay, and he leaves behind a sister, Jean Findlay Ostlund of Mount Vernon, New York.
David went to school at Bronxville High School and graduated in 1950. He served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955, and he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1957. After moving to Connecticut to begin a family, Dave worked for Winchester Western Repeating Arms for 15 years. He then worked at Bellmore-Johnson Tool Company for seven years before starting his own business, Guilford Engineering Associates, as a design engineer and also as an expert witness in firearms cases for many years.
Dave was an avid reader, and his other interests were in radio-controlled model-making, hunting, and fishing. Toward the end of his life, Dave liked going to the Guilford Recreation Center for lunch, where he would be able to spend time with the friends that he made there.
Dave is predeceased by his loving wife, Marie L. Findlay, who died in 2015 after spending 60 years together. He is also predeceased by his son, Erik J. Findlay of New Haven, in 2011. He is survived by his children, David S. (Donna) Findlay of Troy, Alabama, Sharon (Arunas) Jonynas of Chester, Vermont, daughter-in-law Nancy Ovedovitz (Erik) of Hamden and Mark Findlay of Hamden. David leaves behind ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Grandchildren are David J. Findlay (Veronica), Michael Findlay (Michaela), Samuel Jonynas (Adrienne), Adrian Jonynas (Rebecca), Anna Lewis (Tobias), Emily Jonynas, Susan Findlay, Arielle Findlay, Dillon Findlay, and Elizabeth Findlay. Great-grandchild Alexander Jonynas was born in November of 2023.
The family would like to thank Dave’s many caregivers, hospital workers, nursing home workers, and friends who helped to ease the last years of our father’s life. We sincerely and deeply appreciate all of the help that you extended.
Family and friends are invited to visitation hours from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford. Followed by a Memorial service at 11 a.m. at Guilford Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Nut Plains Cemetery, 420 Nut Plains Rd, Guilford.
