Miriam Miller


Miriam “Mimi” Miller, 91, of Guilford, formerly of North Branford, passed away on Jan. 13, 2024, after a brief illness. Mimi was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Jan. 11, 1933, the daughter of the late Lester and Gertrude (Gallery) Miller.

She is survived by brother Edward Miller of Hamden; daughter Joan Beal and her husband, Jeff, of Manhattan; son Adam Sapiro of Baltimore; daughter-in-law Tammie Sapiro of Bradenton, Florida; and grandson Henry Beal of Lewisville, Texas. She was predeceased by a son, Jason Sapiro, of Bradenton.

After earning a bachelor of arts degree at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Mimi taught English at St. Michael’s Grammar School in New Haven (1954-’55) and East Haven High School (1955-’61). After taking time off to raise her three children, Mimi returned to teaching, first at St. Mary’s High School in New Haven (1982-92), where she later became principal, and then Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden for 13 years.

Mimi had a gorgeous soprano voice and a lifelong passion for music. She performed with the local chapter of the Sweet Adelines in her 20s and sang as a soloist and choir member at St. Augustine Church in North Branford, where she was a parishioner for 60 years. She also served as a Eucharistic minister and a member of St. Augustine’s parish council, taught catechism, and chaired the church’s 25th-anniversary committee. After moving to Guilford in 2022, she joined the parish of St. George Church, where she regularly attended morning Mass and sang in the choir.

Politically active throughout her life, Mimi served as a member of the North Branford Town Council for 12 years and was a 12-year member of the North Branford Board of Education, which she chaired from 1973 to 1976. In 2002, North Branford recognized Mimi for her years of service to the town and her efforts in guiding school construction and expansion projects. She was a member of the governing board of Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES), serving as chairman from 1973 to 1975. She also worked with the League of Women Voters, took part in the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment, and volunteered with the NAACP.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Avenue, North Haven.
