Priscilla Schaeneman

Priscilla Anne Schaeneman, long-time resident of Madison, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Dec. 3, 2023, at the age of 93. She was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she attended Classical High School and met her future husband, Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr. After graduating from Classical High School, Priscilla earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, a master’s degree at Wellesley College and later in life, a master’s degree at Southern Connecticut State University.

Priscilla and Lew married in 1955. They had five children and moved to Madison in 1969. While raising her children, she became a member of the League of Women Voters, was a founding member of the Madison Health Commission, helped found the Madison Youth Council, and served on the Altar Guild at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She later developed a career counseling program at Daniel Hand High School.

During retirement, she and Lew split their time between Madison and Oldsmar, Florida. When Lew passed away suddenly in 1998, Priscilla became an advisory board member of the Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr. Foundation. She also served on the scholarship selection committee of the Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation, an entity set up by Stop and Shop, where Lew served as Chairman of the Board and C.E.O.

Priscilla’s love of travel took her throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as Central and South America. Along with travel, she enjoyed her foundation work, gardening, and reading; and she became a jigsaw puzzle addict. She was a member of the Madison Country Club for over 40 years.

Priscilla was predeceased by her husband Lew and leaves behind her five children: Laura Burrows, Margaret, Lewis and his wife Barbara Yaeger, Mary Anne, and Andrew; her two grandchildren, Janna and Derek Burrows and his wife Nora and their two children, Evangeline and Curran.

Priscilla will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Resurrection Cemetery in Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial gift to the Priscilla A. Schaeneman Fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, 70 Audubon Street, New Haven, CT 06510, or online through “Our Funds” at cfgnh.org.
