11/30/2023 04:59 PMFrederick Ross Mason Sr., 95, lifelong resident of Branford, died peacefully in Simsbury, where he had been living and was being cared for at McLean since 2021. He was the husband of 47 years to the late Louraine Whitney Mason.
He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Norko (and her husband Gary) and Carol Mason, and his sons, Fred Mason Jr. and Ken Mason (and his wife Sandy Wickman Mason); six grandchildren, Stephanie (Norko) Stewart, Robin and Erin Norko, Mallory, Marissa, and Jeremy Mason; and his brother Ron Mason. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Nora Mason, and his brothers, Charles Mason and John Mason.
Fred, Freddie, Fritz, worked at Arber Manufacturing for 30 years, the last 20 as owner and president. After “retiring,” he worked for Merlone Metal Spinning. An avid golfer, he played with his group of guys for more than 35 years as a member of the Wallingford Country Club. A veteran, he proudly served in the U.S. Army as a private first class with the 519th Military Police Battalion from June 1946 to October 17, 1947, an experience he talked about fondly.
Fred stayed 57 years in the family home he helped build in Short Beach on Midwood Road, where the neighbors were his brothers, Charlie and John and their families, all residing “cross lots” from his parents and youngest brother Ronny through the woods in Granite Bay.
There will be no calling hours. A private family service will be held at Branford Center Cemetery on Friday, Dec. 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McLean Development Office, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070, or online at www.mcleancare.org/about-us/support-us.
