Jamson Sulemani Lwebuga-Mukasa


Jamson Sulemani Lwebuga-Mukasa, MD/PhD, 77, was born in Kampala, Uganda, on April 12, 1946. He passed away on Oct. 25. He was the son of Omwami Musa Mukooza and Blandina Nakuumba. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Nagle Lwebuga–Mukasa; his children; and grandchildren.

Jamson and Katherine lived at 50 Ledge Hill Road in Guilford from 1979 to 2023. They raised their family there and remain a part of the community of St. John’s Episcopal Church while Jamson worked as a pulmonologist, researcher, and university professor. They also had a second home in Getzville, NY, and attended St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Lwebuga-Mukasa attended Deposit Central School as an American Field Service student from Uganda to the United States of America. He was embraced as a member of the Potter family. Jamson graduated from Amherst College in 1971 and married Katherine the same year. In 1975, he received his medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Jamson undertook completion of his MD and Ph.D. at the same time. He completed his medical residency at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center in 1978 and practiced for over 40 years.

This photo of Jamson was taken by Logan Naluswata Nakyanzi Pollard, his oldest daughter. He shared with his family a love of photography and art. He had a sparkling laugh and genuine manner. Hospitality was extremely important to him, and his house had many rooms. He was a joyful and dedicated doctor. Jamson was dearly loved and made the world a better and more beautiful place.

Friends are invited to a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 129 Ledge Hill Road, Guilford. Burial will be held privately.
