James M. McKenna
It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved James M. McKenna. James passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 24. James is predeceased by his beloved wife of 40 years, Donna (Simpson). We find comfort in knowing that they are now reunited forever.
Mr. McKenna was born July 17, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up surrounded by loving family and friends in Bayridge. His parents, James and Johanna, immigrated from Ireland as teenagers and instilled grit and perseverance in James that remained with him his whole life. Family was everything to James. His siblings and their spouses were his best friends. Mary Jane (Kevin), Tommy (Michaele), Daniel (Eileen), and John brought laughter and friendship throughout his life. James was proud of his many nieces’ and nephews’ (and great-nieces' and nephews') accomplishments. Everyone enjoyed calling him with good news because he would give the most genuinely kind reaction, often yelling “yahoo” and cheering.
James proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps. He retired as an Officer in the New York City Police Department after 20 years of dedicated service, including the Special Tactical Police Force. Even after retiring, James was always the first to help others in need. An avid sports fan, he loved the NY Giants and never gave up hope that they would win even when others had.
The void that James’ passing creates in his immediate family is immeasurable. He was the ultimate father and grandfather, providing unconditional love and support to his children, Megan Pepe (Michael), James, and Brian. He was adored by his two granddaughters, Stella and Caroline.
