Marguerite Gallagher

Marguerite Gallagher, 101, passed away peacefully on Aug. 24 in Florida. Marguerite was born on Nov. 4, 1921, of Charles R. and Bessie A. Gilbert in Old Saybrook. She was predeceased by both of her husbands, William Mulligan and Raymond C. Gallagher; as well as her four brothers: Charles, Arthur, Frank and John Gilbert; and her two grandsons, Francis C. McCauley and Timothy J. Mulligan. She leaves behind a daughter, Diane McCauley of Mims, Florida; and two sons, William and Thomas Mulligan of Old Saybrook; and daughter-in-law Diane Mulligan. Full of love ,she devoted her time to her grandchildren, Wendy Camp of Florida, and Sharon Mulligan of Bristol, Rhode Island; and great-grandchildren, Kacey Mulligan of Chicago, and Jayden Donnelly of Bristol, Rhode Island.

Marguerite was very active in Old Saybrook activities. She volunteered her time on the board of Saye Brooke Village, where she lived for many years. She was given a State Citation on her 98th birthday for being “the first female harbor master in not only Old Saybrook, but the entirety of the United States, a distinction no one else has the privilege to claim.”

She was very talented and loved making things for her family and friends including everything from knitted sweaters and hats, to sewing and arts and crafts. She was a wonderful cook and loved sharing delicious dishes and all kinds of baked goods, including her famous chocolate chip cookies.

The secret to her longevity was no doubt a result of her cheery disposition, caring for others and her zest for life, but she often attributed it to her ritual of having a 4 o’clock scotch on most days.

Interment was on Sept. 5 in Cypress Cemetery in Old Saybrook. To share a memory or express condolences to Marguerite’s family, please visit www.swanfuneralhomeoldsaybrook.com.
