Gregory Loomis Carpenter

Gregory Loomis Carpenter, 66, beloved husband of Peggy Carpenter, loving father of Luke Carpenter, and devoted brother of Pam Carpenter, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Aug. 1.

Greg was a lifelong resident of Short Beach. As the news of his passing spread, the outpouring of love was overwhelming, and the messages were the same: a gentle man, a kind soul, and a friend who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was caring and sensitive, especially if you had a problem; generous with his time and his help, and if there was something that needed to be done, Greg was first in line.

Greg was a painter. He painted houses in all of Branford, especially in Short Beach, where there is not a house that hasn’t felt the touch of his brush. He was an avid watercolorist, often painting scenes from travels and adventures, and loved cooking, baking, music, holiday traditions, and ghost stories.

A memorial to celebrate Greg’s life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Killam’s Point Conference Center located at 131 Killam’s Point Road, Branford, with a service at 4:30 p.m. Killam’s Point has limited parking; a shuttle service will be available starting before 4 p.m. from the Orchard House at 421 Shore Drive, Branford.

Greg cared deeply about the environment and volunteered many hours waking up early to collect water samples for testing, building osprey stands, participating in coastal cleanups, and many other local conservation activities in his duty to leave the world a better place for future generations. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Greg to Save the Sound by check to 127 Church Street, New Haven, CT 06515, or online at savethesound.org.
